Breast total duct excision

Back in June I started having bleeding from my nipple and found a lump in my breast, my go quickly referred me to the breast clinic where they did a ultrasound on the lump and I was examined by a specialist nurse. They were happy the lump was just glandular tissue and sent me merrily on my way .But then I was called 6 weeks later for review with a consultant. She announced that even though the lump is nothing to worry about, the discharge is concerning and she wants to do a total excision of all the ducts in that breast as this is the only way to find out what is causing the discharge/bleeding and as cancer is a possible cause it needed to be done to rule this out.  So I’m booked in for this in a few weeks. I’m really worried. About the procedure, the recovery, the scaring and the waiting for the results! I’m only 38 and really struggling to deal with my emotions at the minute. Finding myself very weepy. Has anyone else had this procedure?

  • Hi

I had a check up after 2 weeks in breast clinic, but luckiy I work in the same hospital in A&E, so when it started to look a bit dogy, one of our Dr took a look for me, it left me with quite a deep open wound and had to have it packed every 3 days for 6 week untill they were happy it had healed enough. It went in 2.5 cm deep and looked like i had a gun shot wound, but not painful. tbh I am experiencing more pain now than throught the whole process, I presume it scar tissue healing etc. Normally provided everything is ok with the op then you are referred straight back to the care of your own GP. it was a little bitter sweet for me, as mum was going through chemo for breast cancer at the time, just as both myself and mum got sorted, my Auntie was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, so its been a rough 18mth for us, I have been referred to genetics to see if we carry the BRCA gene. hope all goes well for you

    Hi Kim,

It sounds as if you have really been through it all as a family. I am glad to hear that you and your mum are sorted now, but so sorry to hear about your auntie's terminal diagnosis. I hope that you do not carry the BRCA gene. This is such a cruel disease.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

I had a total duct excision last week, the operation was fine and I have virtually no pain.  Wasn't worried at all.  I've got my post surgery check up next Wednesday and the nerves are kicking in now.

I had a clear discharge for a long time in my left breast but it never occurred to me that it may be anything serious, I'm in my 40's so naïvely assumed it was a hormone thing.  The discharge changed about a month ago and there was blood in it.  That's when I went to the Dr, I had a mammogram and ultrasound within 10 days, they couldn't see any lumps but there was a widening of my ducts, another 10 days and I was getting the operation.  All a bit of a whirlwind and as I said, I was totally ok.  The waiting for the results to see if the root cause is cancer or not is now taking its toll.  Both of my grans passed away with breast cancer before I was born. My Dad currently has incurable lung, liver and kidney cancer (secondary from melanoma)

    Wish me luck

  • Hi

Sending luck your way . I don't know if you've read this whole thread but I posted on here previous to getting my op and I like you was having the same exact thing which ended up with having total duct excision everything went fine no pain afterwards had a wound check all ok then I was getting nervous for my results thinking it was all very sinister and with my family history of breast cancer and thinking why at my age was I having problems but everything was all fine turn out was papilloma which was guessed before results. I also done my own research that having excessive amount of hormones in your body these they show signs and come out in your breasts, as I did have the implant in and ended up taking the pill as the same time for whatever reasons I believe the build up in hormones caused this as I had other symptoms from the doubling up in contraception but I maybe wrong but it's a wild guess. But yes my fingers are crossed for you and wishing you the best of luck for your results.

Sorry for the long reply I didn't manage to getting round to putting my follow up on here for others to read. X

  • Hi, thanks for responding it looks like we have a very similar story.  Hopefully I'm worrying for nothing, they did mention papilloma but couldn't rule cancer out.  I've been googling like mad over the last few days and it seems they both have very similar symptoms. Not long to wait now, I'll post on here when I get my results.  I'm sure it'll be fine.... Maybe..... If not I'll deal with it

  • Hi, just a quick update.  Got my dressings off today and the all clear. Some small lumps in my ducts but no cancer.  There is hardly any scarring at all. I was lucky and am counting my blessings tonight

  • Aw that's great news! Pleased everything has came back clear! That's good news all around.

  •

    Hi RMckk,

I am so glad to hear your news tonight. this must be a huge relief to you. Have you been discharged, or does your consultant want to keep an eye on you for a while?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi

Thanks, yes it was a massive relief

    Hi,

That's fantastic. Don't forget to check your breasts regularly after this - hope that you never have any need to return to the breast clinic.

    KInd regards,
