Breast total duct excision

Back in June I started having bleeding from my nipple and found a lump in my breast, my go quickly referred me to the breast clinic where they did a ultrasound on the lump and I was examined by a specialist nurse. They were happy the lump was just glandular tissue and sent me merrily on my way .But then I was called 6 weeks later for review with a consultant. She announced that even though the lump is nothing to worry about, the discharge is concerning and she wants to do a total excision of all the ducts in that breast as this is the only way to find out what is causing the discharge/bleeding and as cancer is a possible cause it needed to be done to rule this out.  So I’m booked in for this in a few weeks. I’m really worried. About the procedure, the recovery, the scaring and the waiting for the results! I’m only 38 and really struggling to deal with my emotions at the minute. Finding myself very weepy. Has anyone else had this procedure?

  • Hi,

Sorry to hear you are having sudden pains, I will advise you call your Gp or breast care nurse for professional advice.

In my case, I had a mastectomy on 15th of May and have seen my period after that and I didn't notice any strange pain apart from the normal pain I have been having after surgery.

Take your pain killers and call them ASAP.

    Hope you get better soon.

    Cheers xx

    Hi Imogen,

    Welcome to our forum,

I am so sorry to hear that you are having this pain since your period started. Do please contact your breast care nurse and ask her whether or not this is normal? You may have developed a seroma, or swelling in your breast. This can become quite painful, but eases as soon as the fluid is released. Another possibility is that you may have developed an infection. Again, antibiotics can get that sorted.

I have had a lumpectomy and a double mastectomy and had to have a few seromas drained after my mastectomies, but that gave me great relief each time.

I hope that things settle down for you soon.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I had my excision in October and I never experienced this. I did have tingly/prickly pains which I was told was nerve damage but nothing like you are describing. Might be worth having a pop to see your GP. Take care

  • Hello

I've skimmed through this thread just to read your storys, I'm going through pretty much the same thing I've lost discharge from my left breast dark brown colour and is also painful so I got referred and I've had swabs and a ultrasound done, turns out I have to have either one or all my ducts removed so I'm just waiting for my date to come through. I'm more worried about the outcome as they said there maybe a few cells there but they've told me not to worry. Im just so curious to how this happens have any of yous been giving any light to that, I'm just worrying cause I'm only 24 I just feel this is just the very start of one thing leading to another

    TIA xx

  • Hi Chris, as I said I thankfully got the all clear and nothing was found. They never found a real cause for my symptoms either, my consultant did say there was some widening to some of the ducts but she wouldn’t usually have expected this to cause bloody discharge although she couldn’t rule that out as the cause. So it’s a bit of a mystery for me. But she seemed confident with the pathology that nothing was going on so I have to trust in that.  I think it’s more usual that they do find the cause of the symptoms. Whether that be a papilloma or a ductal issue or something. Hope you’re procedure goes well. Take care

    Hi Littlestar,

This is great news. Have you been discharged completely, or do you have to return for regular check-ups?

I know that it's not very satisfactory when you don't get an answer for your symptoms, but here's hoping that all remains clear.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Nope they said no need to see me again, I’m still too young for mammograms too so no routine screening yet either. I’ll just continue with regular self checks :)

  •

    Hi Littlestar,

    This is even better news.

Just make sure that you don't forget those self checks and, get referred straight back to the breast clinic if you discover anything suspicious. Here's hoping that you never need to!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi

I had this surgery back in april, for a papiloma, same symptoms as you. after surgery i didnt even have any pain as they injected anesthetic into the area, i didnt even feel like i had surgery, it was quick and simple and I was back to normal the following day, unfortunatly for me i got an infection and my wound opened up again, so it sbeen a long process to head but again it was never painful, it doesnt look to deformed the complications with mine make mine look worse but otherwise it was ok. you will be fine x

    Hi Kim,

I'm glad to hear that you didn't suffer any pain, even when you had your infection. Do you have any follow up/review appointments or have you been discharged?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
