Three weeks of heavy vaginal bleeding, very worried

I am 46 years old. Last year I went for a bladder scan and they found that the lining of the womb was abnormally thick ( but I had not had a period for 70 days). I had a biopsy which was normal but nothing else was done. My periods returned with no problems until May of this year when I had another two month gap. I came on again on the 29th July which was light for a few days but turned into 2-3 inch clots and very heavy. The clots seem to have gone but the bleeding is still heavy three weeks later. It was so bad last weekend that I went to A and E but typically it slowed down while I was there so no scan was done. I have been referred for a scan on the 3rd September but I am so worried I have booked a private one next week. The bleeding is heavy and bright red and I have pain in my right leg. I have previously suffered from ovarian cysts but it never affected my cycle. I only have one ovary now as one was removed due to a cyst. My doctor has fond blood work which was normal and included thyroid and menopause tests which came back normal and not menopausal. He prescribed Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding but I haven’t taken it yet as I want the bleeding to stop on it’s own.

sorry about all the information. I sm meant to be starting my first teaching job in three weeks and a PhD. I am very worried that my symptoms point to something sinister. I hope it is ok to post on here. I would appreciate any advice or if anyone has had similar and it had been ok.

  • How are you all doing now?

I am I'm a similar boat. I have a history of irregular heavy bleeding but I have been regular since the birth of my last child in 2014. About a year about I started missing periods and having spotting between periods. The followed by 2 weeks or more of bleeding after missing a period. They were suddenly irregular but still very heavy and I had increased clear discharge as well as bloody discharge.

I bled most of July, which was heavy, I stopped bleeding for some thing like 5-7 days and woke on August 3rd  to passing a clot that was the length of my hand and the width of my palm with the thickness of my finger. I had come out of the blue and it terrified me. Bleeding was gushing and I was really worried. Contacted GP who referred me for urgent scan, bloods and Perscribed transexamic acid. Said to contact when bleeidmh stopped for examination.  Scan referral got rejected citing Covid reasons. Bleeding continued, mostly heavy but did lessen by end of the month, but still had gushes unexpectedly. I contacted GP who said to come in anyway and he examined me and sent for more bloods and on an urgent 2 week referral for gyn. Bloods didn't show I was particularly anemic surprisingly, my CA wasn't raised, and they did a smear which was negative for HPV (although they didn't test the cells). He said contact if I hadn't heard back in 2 weeks.

In this time I had started being in pain, feeling a heaviness and ache. Bleeding increased again and was coming in waves. Contacted GP back around 2.5 weeks later after not hearing back, she prescribed more tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid and iron. She confirmed that she had resent scan in mid August and that I was accepted as a urgent reffeal. Said to contact back by end of September if I hadn't heard back or if symptoms get worse. Bleeding increased a lot, I struggle to leave the house at all, my children have seen me a few times with blood running down my legs and clothes now, I fell over on the shower after feeling faint. It's been something like 58 days of constant bleeding but I was bleeding. before that too.

contacted the GP so said she would chase up both the scan and the referral as needing to be seen immediately. I keep asking about nortinstine (sp?) but they say they want me seen first. I'm so frustrated.

Glad  I am not alone though, sounds like it could be fibroids. Just desperate to be seen.

    How is everyone else doing?

  • Like so many of you I stumbled across this post while doing a Google search. It makes me sad that so many of us have had to go onto a cancer forum to get support for symptoms that more often than not turn out to not be related to cancer.

I am 48 and experienced heavy periods for the first time. It seems to be a topic  that is so really talked about that when we experience it all assume the worst. My GP referred me for an ultrasound (trans-abdominal and transvaginal) and the report came back indicating that I have probable andenomyosis. There was a slight thickening of the ovaries (4.4 mm) but that didn't seem to be of concern to them given that I have missed a period and it now experiencing one very heavy period. I also noticed a small cystic area but again don't think that is serious. Now got a two month wait to see a gynaecologist. I've been perscribes tranexamic and provera I am really not prepared to just carry on bleeding indefinitely. As many of you have commented I believe that this is an issue that is just swept under the carpet because they assume that most women are too embarrassed to take it further.

I would happily agree to a hysterectomy mother then spend months of a cycle of being seen being sent for another test it's stopping the symptoms for a week and then they come back with a vengeance. Why should I have to have a A coil put in, internal scans month after month, cells taken again and again while putting my life on hold???

  • Hi everyone

I hope you are all doing ok.

I have only skimmed through the posts, so please correct me if I am wrong, but I couldn't see any where the Mirena, Provera & TXA worked & I wonder why gynae & gps keep prescribing treatments that don't work.

I'm now 46 & have the Mirena, been using it for 12 years, initially to treat Complex Hyperplasia with Atypia & polyps. Thankfully it worked & between 2012 & 2017 I had no periods. Since then, my periods have returned, really short & light to begin with & I hardly needed any sanitary protection. Unfortunately, in the last year, the amount of blood & length have increased. I've now been bleeding for 7 weeks, my last one was 6 weeks (with a 9 day break in between). I also get really bad cramps - which can be worse & crippling after exercising.

I'm on my 3rd Mirena in 2 years, gynae keep insisting on changing it and I've been on Provera for 2 months. Last week my GP prescribed TXA but as with the lady who started this thread, I want the bleeding to stop naturally.

I've been so fed up with it all that I'm going down the alternative therapy route & have recently started having acupuncture & energy healing.

I have a gynae follow up next week & suspect I'll be fobbed off with more drugs. Although I find it does depend on which consultant - I've spoken to a few & they all have different ideas. One did suggest we remove the coil, stop the provera & see if my body can sort itself out naturally. That's also now my preferred option & I'll be pushing for that.

    take care X

  • Hi guys,

Just reading through all this, and it's kind of nice to know I'm not alone.

I'm 27 years old and I'm on day 25 of my period.
It's strange, as I thought it had stopped yesterday and BAM! Heavy today with clots.

Basically, I've been on a light period for the most of the month and then suddenly in these last 4 days it heavy and had clots. I took that as a sign as it finally flushing everything out so it would end, was lulled into a false sense of security with it becoming lighter and then today it's just become heavier again.

Totally fed up! I went to the doctors and they said to 'wait it out' for another 6 weeks (that was 2 weeks ago) but I have been researching and I'm going to ring up on Monday and push for bloods and an US.
Any advice on how to push for this?
I have slight abdominal discomfort alongside the bleeding.

It's stressing me out (which isn't that great I know) as my husband and I are trying to conceive.

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

ive had on and off heavy bleeding for about 6 months now I'm 30. First started a few years ago when I hadn't had any bleeding for a year after I got the implant taken out. I went for a pelvic scan and was shown to have a thick lining so was referred to gynaecologist. While I was waiting for the appointment I had a very heavy and prolonged period. When I went to the gynaecologist I was told it was because I was over weight and should lose weight to have normal periods. Now I am over weight but nothing to the degree that would effect my period. I was out on the mini pill and that was the end of that. Was on the mini pill a year and decided to come off because it stopped my periods all together, my period returned as normal and had a healthy period cycle for over a year. Then back in July I missed a period, next month I had it then the following month I didn't. That continued up until the start of December. Around the start of December I got my period very heavy with large clots for 2 weeks then I had spotting for a week and now back to a heavy period that isn't stopping with large clots. I've been taking tranexamic acid that I had left over last time ( still in date) because it's so hard to get an appointment with the gp. Even if I get an appointment with the gp they relate anything to my weight and then that's it don't hear from them again, I have been the same weight for 2 years had a healthy cycle for a year and a half then this happens. Anyone have any suggestions what I do. Or what it could be? ( my weight although not great but it has been steady for years and I fit into size 16 clothes so I'm not horribly obese)

  • I have had heavy vaginal bleeding since 23rd January. I know its not long considering some people's posts on here, but I can't get to SEE or even a telephone conversation with my doctor, because of covid. They recommended I wear no tampons but just pads but I am doing so much blood I feel disgusting, and have to wear a tampon as well. The doctor also recommended a pelvic exam, but the first time I had one of them I bleed for six weeks, and a male doctor I spoke to, to tell him about the after-pelvic-exam bleed, said due to the length of my bleeding after the pelvic, he said I should NEVER have anything like that again. My doctor at our walk in center said if I'm not changing protection every one or two hours, its usually further apart than that, then I'm not losing enough blood to worry about. My mother said I should get a D and C but due to my bleeding history when I had a pelvic exam, I don't think that's a good idea, since I am trying to STOP bleeding. What does anyone else recommend, as its snowing heavily here and due to my disability, I can't walk to the surgery or hospital, as I can't walk on snow and ice at all without falling over! I think my bleeding is either caused by mennorhagia or uterine fibroids but I am not a doctor. I'm 35

  • Hi, did you get your bleeding sorted? Reading through these posts yours was most similar to my experience. I am currently in a position where blood is pouring out, i'm on tranexamic acid but swapping to noresthisterone after they have finished. i was sent to a&e yesterday to have vitals checked and an examination, gynae doctor there literally had a speculum in for 10 seconds and send no signs of 'new' bleeding and i was sent home. GP had ordered a scan and a referral but referral could take weeks. I had fibroids removed last may 2020 with a hysteroscopy and a mirena coil fitted. I am absolutely scared to death with all this bleeding, i thought my treatment last year would solve problems but it obviously hasn't. has anyone else experienced fibroids or heavy bleeding returning after treatment and what was the outcome?

  • Hello, my bleeding was due to a very large polyp , after a lot of bleeding, and ending up in A&E with anemia,  and after 2 units of blood, I was sent for MRI so they could see exactly what was going on, and there it was a 9cm polyp,  so within 2 weeks I was in hospital again, having a polypectomy,  but when the surgeon spoke to me after the surgery he stated that he removed the large polyp but there was a small one hidden behind, but visability was poor so he couldn't remove it, so the bleeding has stopped, and im now on a waiting list to have the small polyp removed in the next few weeks, it doesn't cause me any problems but the gynaecologist wants it to be removed, hope this helps.xx

  • thank you for replying. i'm so glad you know the cause of the bleeding and it has settled since surgery. good luck for your next surgery, sounds like a good plan to get it removed.

i wish there was more urgency with getting seen and sorted, it doesn't feel right to be dealing with this sort of bleeding for weeks on end.

    xxx

  • Hello, my advice to you is,... keep an eye on the bleeding ,if you're in any doubt go to A&E, hopefully your referral and scan will shed some light on the subject, your fibroids may have grown back it's not unusual my polyps have grown back twice, so I had treatment but the bleeding continued due to more polyps growing,  it's very very doubtful to be anything sinister .xx
