Three weeks of heavy vaginal bleeding, very worried

I am 46 years old. Last year I went for a bladder scan and they found that the lining of the womb was abnormally thick ( but I had not had a period for 70 days). I had a biopsy which was normal but nothing else was done. My periods returned with no problems until May of this year when I had another two month gap. I came on again on the 29th July which was light for a few days but turned into 2-3 inch clots and very heavy. The clots seem to have gone but the bleeding is still heavy three weeks later. It was so bad last weekend that I went to A and E but typically it slowed down while I was there so no scan was done. I have been referred for a scan on the 3rd September but I am so worried I have booked a private one next week. The bleeding is heavy and bright red and I have pain in my right leg. I have previously suffered from ovarian cysts but it never affected my cycle. I only have one ovary now as one was removed due to a cyst. My doctor has fond blood work which was normal and included thyroid and menopause tests which came back normal and not menopausal. He prescribed Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding but I haven’t taken it yet as I want the bleeding to stop on it’s own.

sorry about all the information. I sm meant to be starting my first teaching job in three weeks and a PhD. I am very worried that my symptoms point to something sinister. I hope it is ok to post on here. I would appreciate any advice or if anyone has had similar and it had been ok.

  • Just adding to thread as finding more useful than articles . I’m on week 2 of bleeding but it’s ridiculously heavy . I hadn’t had a period for 2 months just spotting so I assumed was because of that but I’m becoming worried . I’m 31 and no previous issues , I feel fine in myself just bleeding a lot

  • Following thread. Im 50 and have had irregular periods for 2 years. I’m on week 8 of heavy heavy bleeding!  Tranexamic hasn’t helped and I’m currently taking Medroxyprogesterone for 2 weeks. After initially slowing bleeding to spotting it starting to get heavier again and I’m feel it’ll just go  back to heavy again when I stop taking them. Doctor wanted to do an examination but said I needed to stop bleeding first. I will be back on the phone to her after this weekend. I’ve had blood tests but they were ok. So far I’ve only had telephone consultations, but I think I probably need to start pushing for further tests. I’m exhausted. Any advice would be lovely

  • Hi. I don't mean to be rude but if your doctor wants to do an examination, why has the doctor not prescribed norethisterone for you? That is very good at stopping the bleeding. I am 52 years old and at the end of last year, my cycle went all over the place; I was spotting then sometimes bleeding. Then when it got a bit heavier again, I thought this wasn't normal so I went to my GP who referred me for an abdominal ultrasound scan. That was a bit delayed because i was going away in December 2018 for 3 weeks. I bled very heavily a week before I went and then for the whole 3 weeks I was on holiday. I had a scan in January which showed fibroids and a left sided cyst. The GP did a blood test as well in January but by this time I had stopped bleeding. So the blood count and iron level came back fine - the tumour markers were fine too. She referred me for a hysteroscopy but not at my request - she made the suggestion.

I had that done last week and I am now waiting for my results. However, 2 weeks before the hysteroscopy, I went to have a chat with the specialist nurse about the procedure and I had started bleeding very heavily then. It was the specialist nurse who gave me norethisterone to take so I would stop bleeding by the time my procedure came around: the nurse had said she would not be able to do the hysteroscopy if I was still bleeding heavily as all she would see would be a blood clot.

My advice to you would be to go and ask your GP about a hysteroscopy. They use a camera to see what is going on in your uterus. You will probably have to be given something to stop the bleeding before the procedure like I was.

I hope this helps. I hope you can get this sorted out.

    Best regards.

  • That is why he prescribed the progesterone. It’s was supposed to stop the bleeding but didn’t completely. I’ve now had an exam and have been referred for a scan but with a 6-8 week wait. Over the weekend the cramps were unbearable so am now on high dose codine too. On a break from progesterone so bleeding has got extreme again so just starting tranexamic asid again. Spoke to another doc and she has finally referred me to gynaecology. Don’t know how long that will take yet. Into my 10th week of bleeding and 2nd week of cramps now. I decided to be a pain in the *** patient from now on, it seems like the only way things get done!

  • Hi

i have been bleeding for 6 months now continual. After an ultrasound to see if I could have a coil they picked up an 8cm x 7cm solid mass in my left ovary. Had ca125 clear, afp and afp clear, ct scan no disease anywhere else, now being tested for Granulosa cell tumour which is rare. Surgery booked for a complete abdominal hysterectomy on 8th June.

Visited my GP on Thursday due to all of my period problems & have had a blood test & now awaiting an appointment for an ultrasound to check for cysts and fibroids. Have been given Tranexmanic Acid & was told to take for 10 days however online it says up to 4 days & so far my periods have gotten heavier & i have hd extremely bad period pains which i never usually get

  • I had small amounts of bleeding three years ago and before that I had not periods since 2000because of a tablet I was put on which was thes side affect.  I am 61 so at time the time I had been through the menopause.  I was sent for a ultasound and found i had a thick lining of the womb and then I had a camera put inside and found two large systw whichy were removed and then was tolkd my cells were swollen and should be flat and treatment was either a tablet of merina coil which release a hormone every three or six months I had a biopsy whichg was cear on the last one I had thgis year and said i could keep the coil inb or have it removed I would be okay.  I had it removed this monday and was told will have a little bleeding for one or two days and should be okay.  But if it continues to come back.  Well I have had stomach pains and cramps and bleeding which is not like I had before.  This is flooding and going through to my clothes.  I managed to ge  a doctors appointment and saw another doctor who said why did yuou have it removed as thoiugh I have taken it on my back  to have this removed.  So she was saying it will continue to bleed .  I was not happy at all with her esponse and told her that I was told I was okay to have it removed everything was fine.    I was told that if the bleeding does n ot stop I would haved to have the cil again or tablet.  I was inder horendous pain when I had the coil put in had to have it done under anaesthetic and after I could not walk or stand too long and I mean a few minutes.  I.  This went on for six months .  I was told to persevere with the pain.  I was told today that the tablet would have the same side affects as the coil.  and I mentioned about my eyes side affects of another tabl;et and she seemed to say I would have side affects with my eyes with either of these.  The bleeding is alot worse then before I had the emrina coil put in.  So I just dont rust my doctors.  I have changed once before because the last doctors told me pins and needles in my hands and fingers were nothing to worry about and also having pain in my elbows ands wrists and groin area was nothing to worry about was tissue pain gave me pain killers.  When I argued with my doctor about seeing a pain con saultant she did not like to send me but i would  not give up and when I did see h9im I was diagnosed with chronic widespread pain and then diagnoisaed by a rheumatologist with fibromyalgia.  So apart from that I had a vitamin d deficiency and was seen by a consultant who eventually after many many tests with a overactive parathyroid which was taking all the calcium out of my bones and had a non beligmant tumour on it .  This had to wait ayear for operation to have removed.  And there is more but I wont continue.  So this is why i get on google and search for answers and help as my docors tell me very little and dont seem to be bothereds on if you have a heart attack stroke or you may have cancer. I dont rate doctors as doctors any more .  With all respect to the medical profession yes they have a hard job to do and work very hard but the GPS now seem uncaring and not interested.  I worked up until i became ill in the Caring profession but at the lower end and was working long hours and was a very physical and mentally demanding job.  Had no social life and my life revolveds around my work.

  • Hello,

I am on my 20th day of bleeding heavily. I use the really thick night time pads and I have to change every time I use the loo, I've lost count of how many packets of pads I've bought now. I also leak sometimes, the weird thing is... I was on the contraceptive pill desogestrel for years! I read some bad stuff, I came off it. I was only on it because of painful periods due to polycystic ovaries and I'd tried other things but the mini pill worked best. So I came off it and after 2 days I started bleeding. And the bleeding seemed normal, it started to slow... Then it got worse, and worse now there's no clots it's just been red blood for 2 or more weeks now. I went to my Dr's and got that transmeticacid or however you spell it. It too said take for 4 days maximum, it hasn't worked. It has slowed but not stopped, I am getting more worried. The Dr called it a rebound bleed, that I haven't bled for that long that now it is having like a double period. Well that was a week ago now it is a triple period. And weirdly before I came off the pill (like 1 month prior to coming off the pill) I had horrible pains down below, like I was giving birth and I was pushing something out with my pelvic floor and it started to hurt internally. It's like my body wasn't doing it, it was doing it itself. And when I bent down it felt like someone was pushing into my uterus really hard mainly on the right hand side, I'm thinking a cyst burst. Oh and I have possible fibroids, I am going for a scan this week to check up. I am only 23 and it's really worrying, I feel like there's something wrong like I'm hemorrhaging from my womb? The Dr felt my tummy and said it was soft and said it was a good thing, but I've never bled this long and I also have bladder issues.. Don't know if it's connected, I have a mass growing in my bladder that I need surgically removing which I am going for a consultation for in the morning. Or I'm worried I have endometriosis, it's just I try talk to my Dr's. You never get the same one and they never have the time of day for you, they want you out the door they cba.

    Thanks for reading

  • I am so sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds really challenging and i can somewhat relate.

Im 31 and now 12 weeks into the worst bleed of my life after barely having a period for 2 years (probably 24 hours over 2 years if you counted up all the half hours of spotting id had) am utterly exaughsted and no idea when ill get an answer. I tried the tranexamic acid and it did give me a few days of just spotting which was a relief but that was just to get me to the point where i could be scanned. I am now on the other meds but just for the next 10 days. I am having some fairly severe symptoms of anaemia including being breathless all the time which i have never ever had before and am trying my best to remain in work despite the GP wanting to sign me off for a few weeks to try and get some rest. Im having to take clothes to work to change into (i normally do 3 clothes changes a day) all our meeting room chairs are green so i take a big scarf and fold it over so its on the back of the chair and my seat so i have some sort of protetion and put a towel down to drive. Im slowly realising that this isnt really a life. Being tired all the time, not yawning tired but unable to pick up a cup of tea tired, out of breath walking to the car outside my house tired.

This thread is so nice bacuse i dont feel quite as alone as i do normally, ive started to feel pretty house bound lately so thank you all for the reassurance that its not just me x

  • hey,

how are you all getting on? I have been having tests for abnormal bleeding. I have a thickend uterine lining. I have had a polyp removed which was benign and a womb biopsy which showed it was thickened but no abnormal cells were present. I have been put on Noristherone 5mg 3 times a day to thin the lining until i have the mrena coil fitted on june 1st and a hysteroscopy. I have PCOS and never had a regular cycle. im gutted having to have the coil as i have been trying to get pregnant :( but thats been put on hold now. Im feeling very down about it all and just keep worrying what if the lining turns abnormal, what if i have to have a hysterectomy and im not able to have children. I have been on noristheri=one about a month. it stopped the bleeding for 2 weeks then it started again and i have been bleeding now for 2 weeks (its not really heavy it never has been) its just annoying.

    thanks for listening x
