Three weeks of heavy vaginal bleeding, very worried

I am 46 years old. Last year I went for a bladder scan and they found that the lining of the womb was abnormally thick ( but I had not had a period for 70 days). I had a biopsy which was normal but nothing else was done. My periods returned with no problems until May of this year when I had another two month gap. I came on again on the 29th July which was light for a few days but turned into 2-3 inch clots and very heavy. The clots seem to have gone but the bleeding is still heavy three weeks later. It was so bad last weekend that I went to A and E but typically it slowed down while I was there so no scan was done. I have been referred for a scan on the 3rd September but I am so worried I have booked a private one next week. The bleeding is heavy and bright red and I have pain in my right leg. I have previously suffered from ovarian cysts but it never affected my cycle. I only have one ovary now as one was removed due to a cyst. My doctor has fond blood work which was normal and included thyroid and menopause tests which came back normal and not menopausal. He prescribed Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding but I haven’t taken it yet as I want the bleeding to stop on it’s own.

sorry about all the information. I sm meant to be starting my first teaching job in three weeks and a PhD. I am very worried that my symptoms point to something sinister. I hope it is ok to post on here. I would appreciate any advice or if anyone has had similar and it had been ok.

  • Hi there, not a nice situation to be in. But I don't understand why you haven't taken the tranexamic acid. You went to the doc for help and advice, and haven't followed the advice. I say this as a female who some years back had very heavy bleeding, took those tablets, and things settled down. Why wait when you have a possible solution available? Please think about it.

  • Thank you for replying. The prescription says take for up to four days so I was worried that the bleeding would stop and then start again for the scan. Also I was hoping it would subside on its own and I could stop worrying. You are right, my husband has gone for the prescription. If you don’t mind me asking did you have prolonged bleeding as well? Thanks again

  • Hi!

I’ve found this thread incredibly helpful. I’ve now been bleeding heavily, non-stop for the past three weeks and feel incredibly tired because I’m probably anaemic by now. I’m having bloods and an US done in the next few days but can’t help but feel anxious about the whole situation as my mum died of ovarian cancer two years ago. I’m 51 and possibly perimenopausal so it might be just that but GP asked for CA125 just in case. If something of concern does show up, I hope I can ask for an hysterectomy and oophorectomy as I don’t won’t to go through what my mum went through. Everything is taking so long, though...

Best wishes to all and thanks for sharing your experiences

  • Hi CJ,

I am glad you have found it helpful. I had the CA125 test too as I have had repeated ovarian cysts and only have one ovary now.  I am very sorry about your Mother.

Ovarian is a concern of mine too. I currently have another cyst. I don’t think the cyst has anything to do with my bleeding though as all the tests and biopsy have come back normal. I wil keep asking for it to be monitored.

My bleeding went on for months but the medication has really helps. Let me know how your test goes. I am hopeful that your bleeding is hormonal like mine.

    Very best wishes,

    M

  • Hi I have been bleeding for 3 weeks - it started slow for 4 days then flooding with large, dark clots.  Luckily I use a moon cup otherwise I would not be able to cope with the deluge.  I went to A and E last week and was given tranexamic acid which I took for 4 days but although for a few hours each day the flow slowed, i still had massive floods.  Then I was prescribed mini pill for 10 days. It had almost stopped the flow but I am worried about what will happen when I come iff it.  Can anyone tell me if their experience?

  • Hi I have also been bleeding for over 5 weeks. It started quite light but seems to be getting heavier as the weeks go on. I did have radiotherapy a few weeks ago for a basil skin cancer on my forehead but apparantly bleeding isn't a side effect, unless it caused stress to my body. My Doctor gave me Medroxyprogesterone tablets to try and stop the bleeding but it has not worked. I had an ultrasound on Sunday which showed up slight thickening of the womb and a possible cyst on one ovary. I have been referred to a gynaecologist so just waiting for the appointment to come through. I'm 50 and my periods before this were quite normal 3-5 weeks. My blood tests shown I was anaemic but every other blood tests were fine. Just hoping for answers soon :/

    Best wishes to all

  • Just adding to thread as finding more useful than articles . I’m on week 2 of bleeding but it’s ridiculously heavy . I hadn’t had a period for 2 months just spotting so I assumed was because of that but I’m becoming worried . I’m 31 and no previous issues , I feel fine in myself just bleeding a lot

  • Following thread. Im 50 and have had irregular periods for 2 years. I’m on week 8 of heavy heavy bleeding!  Tranexamic hasn’t helped and I’m currently taking Medroxyprogesterone for 2 weeks. After initially slowing bleeding to spotting it starting to get heavier again and I’m feel it’ll just go  back to heavy again when I stop taking them. Doctor wanted to do an examination but said I needed to stop bleeding first. I will be back on the phone to her after this weekend. I’ve had blood tests but they were ok. So far I’ve only had telephone consultations, but I think I probably need to start pushing for further tests. I’m exhausted. Any advice would be lovely

  • Hi. I don't mean to be rude but if your doctor wants to do an examination, why has the doctor not prescribed norethisterone for you? That is very good at stopping the bleeding. I am 52 years old and at the end of last year, my cycle went all over the place; I was spotting then sometimes bleeding. Then when it got a bit heavier again, I thought this wasn't normal so I went to my GP who referred me for an abdominal ultrasound scan. That was a bit delayed because i was going away in December 2018 for 3 weeks. I bled very heavily a week before I went and then for the whole 3 weeks I was on holiday. I had a scan in January which showed fibroids and a left sided cyst. The GP did a blood test as well in January but by this time I had stopped bleeding. So the blood count and iron level came back fine - the tumour markers were fine too. She referred me for a hysteroscopy but not at my request - she made the suggestion.

I had that done last week and I am now waiting for my results. However, 2 weeks before the hysteroscopy, I went to have a chat with the specialist nurse about the procedure and I had started bleeding very heavily then. It was the specialist nurse who gave me norethisterone to take so I would stop bleeding by the time my procedure came around: the nurse had said she would not be able to do the hysteroscopy if I was still bleeding heavily as all she would see would be a blood clot.

My advice to you would be to go and ask your GP about a hysteroscopy. They use a camera to see what is going on in your uterus. You will probably have to be given something to stop the bleeding before the procedure like I was.

I hope this helps. I hope you can get this sorted out.

    Best regards.

  • That is why he prescribed the progesterone. It’s was supposed to stop the bleeding but didn’t completely. I’ve now had an exam and have been referred for a scan but with a 6-8 week wait. Over the weekend the cramps were unbearable so am now on high dose codine too. On a break from progesterone so bleeding has got extreme again so just starting tranexamic asid again. Spoke to another doc and she has finally referred me to gynaecology. Don’t know how long that will take yet. Into my 10th week of bleeding and 2nd week of cramps now. I decided to be a pain in the *** patient from now on, it seems like the only way things get done!

  • Hi

i have been bleeding for 6 months now continual. After an ultrasound to see if I could have a coil they picked up an 8cm x 7cm solid mass in my left ovary. Had ca125 clear, afp and afp clear, ct scan no disease anywhere else, now being tested for Granulosa cell tumour which is rare. Surgery booked for a complete abdominal hysterectomy on 8th June.
