Is this throat cancer? Please help, I am terrified!

Hello, I hope someone will advise me because I am so scared that I have throat cancer that I can't sleep or perform any of my daily activities anymore, because this is all I think about. I am a 19 year old male.

I had an on and off sore throat and hoarseness for many many months, but was a smoker, so didn't think too much about it. However, I quit around two months ago and not long after that the sore throat and hoarseness started again and continue to this day. Furthermore, During the last month I developed difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing. Not only does food sometimes feels like it sticks to my throat when swallowing, I have difficulty performing the swallowing action itself, even when I only have saliva in my moath. It's as if my muscles are harder to contract or something. The breathing problems feel as if something is blocking the air flow and I need to put extra effort in if I want to take a deep breath. Furthermore, my chest often hurts when I swallow. During the past few days, I developed this constant urge to clear my throat, but it is impossible to do so no matter how much I try. It's as if something is stuck there.

I have been told I have acid reflux before. I saw 2 GPs about this problem in the last weeks and both of them didn't even bother to look at me after learning that I have a history of acid reflux, they just gave me some omeprozol and told me not to come back for a month.

The symptoms seem far too severe for a simple thing like acid reflux, especially since I have been living with it for a few years and never had anything this bad. I have found online that these symptoms are consistent with throat ir esophagus cancers and now am in absolute panic mode. I cannot sleep or focus on anything else but the thoughts of cancer and dying.

Therefore, I have the following questions:

Is it possible that acid reflux would cause symptoms so severe?

How likely is it to be cancer?

What else could be causing this?

And finally, how fast are these types if cancer? How risky is it to wait the month for an appointment? Because all I can think about is how the cancer is growing and spreading and how it will be to late by the time anyone actually tests me.

  • I have the exact same symptoms had for about 2 years now I got told it’s acid reflux the doctor told me if it was cancer I would be dead by now but am still really worried about it as I don’t think acid reflex can cause there types of problems expressly in the throat I have difficulty swallowing and breathing had for about 2 years fells as if something is sticking in my throat but just keep getting told it’s acid reflux

  • Quick update on my previous comment.

In June 2019, I had another camera down my throat, They told me, I have amongst other things a 8 cm Hiatus Hernia.

So those worried about getting food stuck, it's worth looking up Hiatus Hernia, and seeing if your symtoms fit.

Symptoms from an NHS website include

have a painful burning feeling in your chest, often after eating (heartburn)

bring up small amounts of food or bitter-tasting fluids (acid reflux)

    have bad breath.

    burp and feel bloated.

    feel or be sick.

have difficulty or pain when swallowing.

With a hiatus hernia you may:

have a painful burning feeling in your chest, often after eating (heartburn)

bring up small amounts of food or bitter-tasting fluids (acid reflux)

    have bad breath.

    burp and feel bloated.

    feel or be sick.

have difficulty or pain when swallowing.

As for anyone worried about swallowing difficulties and cancer, remember, there would be blood in your vomit

  • Hi Sorry but i disagree with the comments above.  I had a sore throat which felt like everything was acidic so I assumed it was an ulcer as I have Crohns Disease.  I was also finding it difficult to swallow and often bought food back up especially if eating later at night then laying down.  All sounding like acid reflux and or an ulcer.  Got sent to ENT as had been going on a few months and got diagnosed with cancer in the epiglottis.  At no time has there been any sign of blood in vomit, perhaps this refers to oesophogeal cancer.

  • Hi, I'm so sorry I didn't see this, I unsure what mine is whether it is acid related or even anxiety related.  Sore throats are intermittent.

Have you got anywhere else with this, do hope you OK

  • I have been unable to eat bread meat etc since December 2018, I have been eating mainly soft fruits, soup and scrambled egg. I went to my gp as soon as I started having trouble swallowing and was told I had anxiety (which I knew not to be true) a few weeks later I went back to my gp and saw a different doctor which he put down to acid reflux. I have been back and fourth to my gp surgery because the symptoms don't seen to go away. I went back yesterday and have been referred for a endoscopy, bloods to be done and back down to see my doctor in 3 weeks.

So for anyone reading forums like this one, If you think theres something wrong then push for investigation. Hopefully in my case its just a narrowing osophegus that needs widened but only time will tell.

  • Hi gps are quick to put things down to anxiaty but anxiaty can just about mimic anythig going . But yes he should have sent you for edoscopy the older gps tend to be so dimissive .not all of course i wouldnt worry could be nothing but best to get it checked if there wrong they seem to get away with it .regards

  • Hey just wondering if you have had any more news on what this might be? I'm suffering with the same symptoms & am being told it's acid reflux too. Have you had a camera down your throat to check for anything sinister ? I look on Google too and go into panic mode I'm absolutely petrified, I'm being sent for a scan bow I had a camera down my throat and my esophagus is swollen so I'm starting to panic now thinking it may be cancer.

  • Hiya,

i had the camera down a few weeks ago and was told all was ok and it’s acid reflux xx told me to stop eating certain foods etc xx luckily nothing else xx hope all is ok with u x

  • As I have previously told you all, I have similar symptoms.

I had my second camera down my throat recently and was told I have an 8cm Hiatus Hernia, which is caused by Acid Reflux. So please, always make sure you take your medication and always encourage your doctor to send you for the camera.

As previously mentioned in more detail, I get food stuck often. The other day, I got a piece of pork stuck. It took TWO DAYS for it to go in my stomach, and that meant I was in A&E/Hospital for two days, having buscopan drips, pain killers ( wasnt in pain, didnt get that one) a saline drip and a few others. I was so hungry and Dehydrated. One small piece of pork, got stuck on Friday night, it didnt go till 8 pm Sunday.

I have just this second, woke up choking on Acid reflux, so I know food getting stuck is going to be happening again to me in the near future. But it's vital you get yours checked.

  • Hiya,,

I'm kinda in the same boat as you I'm only 15 yrs of age but I've jus wanted to get some answers.  I've been searching up symptoms of throat and lung cancer and a few symptoms ive been experiencing have been mentioned.
    1. Back/neck pains

    2.Sore chest

    3.Needing to clear my throat

im just worrying because these symptoms have come up and I've been experiencing them like I said. I have been smoking for about 2 years but I've stopped recently.
I did attend the doctors this week and I informed the nurse about my back pains she done a few checks on it to see it there was any problems but all seemed okay. I then went on to telling her that I was worried about my throat and she looked in it and again said all okay. However, she did book an appointment at the hospital for a blood test to test if I may pack vitamin D or calcium.

i just want to be reassured and I would appreciate someone replying to this.
