Post Menopausal Bleeding

Hi

Last night (Friday) I had some light brown discharge.  There is also slightly brighter brown/red when I insert my finger into my vagina (apologies if TMI!) but no further discharge as yet.  I’m 55 years old and it’s been over 3 years since my last period.  I’m terrified it’s cancer.  I spoke to the 111 service and she recommended I get a BV test kit, which indicated trichomoniasis which as I’ve not been sexually active suggests it’s not the most accurate result.  I will phone my GP on Monday but I’m already seeing a psychologist for health anxiety so this is my nightmare come true.

I live on my own, I don’t have anyone I can talk to (friends were never really my thing!) and my family have passed away over the last few years so I’m very isolated.  I just thought it might be helpful to reach out via this forum for connection.

Thank you for reading this.

  • How are you getting on Maebelle , any updates for you ?

  • Yes Cat-cat good!!you need to be pro active. I got my ultra sound and biospy by chasing them. Results 3 to 4 weeks. I won't be going bk to work until September as summer holidays. Sleeping well, eating and no pain relief so far!!! Just had a lovely shower it was heaven. Hope appointment gives you re assurance. At least you've got the holiday as a, distraction. Xxxx

  • Good morning Cat-Cat

I’m so pleased your friend gave you that gentle push to chase up your appointment as by the sounds of it you would have been waiting indefinitely.  Considering the name of the ward you’d think they’d be a tad more proactive and on the ball.  So pleased they were able to book you into a cancellation slot - hopefully you’ll get more clarification on what’s going on and what further input, if any, is needed.

I have my appointment with the consultant on Wednesday.  It’s for an internal, vaginal ultrasound and a biopsy if needed.  Just typing this makes me very scared!  I was worried that I’d have to attend on my own but my neighbour has kindly offered to come with me so that’s a positive.  I was hoping I’d get results on the day but from what you and Dollysocks have written that sounds unlikely so more waiting seems on the cards.  I’m really hoping I don’t need a hysteroscopy as that sounds very painful and I’m a bit of a wimp!

  • Good morning Dollysocks - I’m so pleased you’re making such brilliant progress in such a short time - I’m very impressed.  That first shower after illness/surgery really is the most wonderful thing!  Having to go through a hysterectomy is one of the things I’ve been worried about-I live on my own so worried I wouldn’t be able to cope but your progress has calmed me down a bit so thank you.  I’m so pleased you’re not going to feel pressured into going back to work due to the holidays-as Cat-Cat says you need to heal physically, emotionally and mentally and that can take time xx

  • Oh Maebelle , I am glad that you have a date . That’s also good that you have the option of the follow up on the day as well . Though no one looks forward to a biopsy , but at least you won’t have to wait weeks .
Re the hysteroscopy , check re the options available to you for pain control . No expert but I have read about gas & air , local anaesthetic    and also a general anaesthetic. I think if you discuss it straight away , that may be easier than feeling a bit forced into the option you don’t want - as you don’t want to make a fuss .
That’s also good that your neighbour can go with you . Xxxx

  • That’s good Dollysocks that you have time off until September . Going through all this is difficult enough without also being worried / stressed about work .

Hope you have things to distract you , even if just watching a good series on netflix or reading .xxx

    • Cat - cat what has happened to me has really put things into perspective that work isn't the be all and end all of life. I'm so pleased I survived the operation everything else is a bonus. I've been watching Netflix, reading, pottering around to keep moving. I'm tempted to go for a short walk tomorrow. Fingers crossed it continues. I'm so pleased things are moving forward for you xxxx
  • Maebelle you're going to be ok. See all the investigations as a step by step process. Believe me the more you go through the better you feel in getting to the end goal... Knowing!! If I lived by you I would have gone with you x They can't tell you anything from the biospy, but from the ultrasound they will tell you if they see thickness, fibroids, cysts etc. The biospy will take time to come back. Hopefully, the ultrasound may give you a little re assurance. Chin up Maebelle xxxx

  • Thank you Cat-Cat for the information regarding pain management for the hysterectomy-I’ve started a list of queries to take with me so will add this x

  • Thank you so much for these reassurances - they really do help xx
