Abnormal breast lesion and lymph node

Hello,

I’m currently waiting for biopsy results after a fast-moving breast issue and I’m trying to make sense of everything that’s happened so far.

A lump in my breast has grown rapidly—about tripling in size over roughly 8 weeks. I had an ultrasound about 7 months ago which was clear at the time, but this recent scan came back abnormal. On the same day, I also had a mammogram and ultrasound of my lymph nodes, both of which were described as abnormal/suspicious.

Because of this, I had a core needle biopsy taken that same day, with multiple samples taken from both the breast lump and the lymph nodes. Metal markers were also placed. I’ve since been told the scans are considered “suspicious,” and my case is going to a multidisciplinary panel next Wednesday.

I’m now waiting on results (day 4 at the moment). I’ve been told to prepare for a difficult conversation when I get them.

In terms of symptoms, I’ve noticed fatigue, some intermittent pain in the lump (currently around 4–6 cm), shorter periods than usual, swollen lymph nodes under my jaw, and a general heavy or weak feeling in my body.

I’m struggling with the uncertainty and trying not to jump to worst-case scenarios while I wait for answers.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

  • Heya and welcome. The helpline number is 0808 800 4040. Call tomorrow.

  • Hello MaxiiDarling

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some concerns about your breast health and that, following an appointment at the breast clinic, you've been told to prepare for a difficult conversation. It's perfectly understandable that you're struggling with the uncertainty and trying not to jump to worst-case scenarios at the moment.

I know that for many people, this period of waiting for a firm diagnosis is really difficult. It's natural that at this point our minds lead us to consider all possible outcomes, and it can be really overwhelming at times. I'm sure that the days seem to feel like weeks at the moment, but it's positive that the specialists are moving quickly and that hopefully your results will be discussed at next week's MDT. This should mean that they're in a position to talk with you relatively soon afterwards and give you some answers.

It might be an idea to write down any questions that you have ahead of your next appointment. That way, you won't forget to ask anything you want to know about, and you can write down any information they tell you that you don't want to forget. If you have someone who can attend the appointment with you, perhaps they could take some notes for you.

I know that many people find it helpful to talk to someone when they are in this period of limbo, and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, informarion and support they can. They might also be able to help you think about any questions you want to ask the specialists. If you'd like to chat with them, they're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch MaxiiDarling, and let us know how you get on. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi MaxiiDarling.  I think the waiting is the worst.  I also found a lump in my breast and had the mammogram, ultrasound and then biopsy taken on the same day.  The doctor who did it sort of gave me a heads up it might be bad news.  This was better for me because I was half way prepared when I went back to see surgeon.  Mine did turn out to be cancer but yours might not.  One thing is take someone with you.  My husband came with me and he remembered a lot more of what was said than I did.  Sometimes people also record the conversation (best to ask permission first).  That way if you forget, you can playback the recording.  I am wishing you the best of luck.  Please let me know how you get on.

  • Thank you. Based upon the tests and what I’ve been told so far, it would be irresponsible of me to believe it isn’t cancer - you just try to be hopeful, right?. I’ll know more next week. Just trying to take it one day at a time tbh. The time will pass anyway. I’m going to record the conversation and I have questions ready. I’m as prepared as I can be, I think.

Do you feel comfortable telling me more about your experience and treatment?

  • Hi Maxine,  yes I am fine with talking about things.  I feel it is good for me to be open and honest.  When are you going back?

  • It goes to the next panel on Wednesday so I’ll have my appointment Thursday/Friday I assume?
