After colonoscopy, doctors think I may have rectal cancer - never been so scared

After my colonoscopy the doctors words were a blur but indicates serious and cancer , had ct scan mri and cpex in morning, weds is mdt meeting then I assume I'll get an appt to see what's happening , I have never been as scared in my life .

  • Thank you both so much.

I admire your strength and wisdom and am so grateful that you share it here.

I really hope that you are doing well. months seems an age, Beaumont! And, Willow, I hope the chemo goes as well as it can and isn't too debilitating. Let us know how you get on.

I've been up and down emotionally and think I'm in a bit of a dark place, fearing the more detailed news and next steps. So long as they can treat and cure, which is what they originally said and what you all seem to be experiencing, I hope I can get myself prepared for the rigours of getting well again.

  • Hi James. I don’t want to give you false hope but they basically told me I had cancer when I had my colonoscopy. I was expecting to be discussed at the MDT meeting but wasn’t as the scans and biopsies showed no signs of cancer. I have since had 3 pre-cancerous polyps removed and need to go back in 3 years. Hoping you have a similar outcome

  • Hi there how you and your daughter doing ? Not long to scans now , the letter I got after scans only said mild improvement which disheartened me a bit but the doc said it was good so I went with that , will it be 2 wks till results or sooner ? Lots of love xx

  • Hi how are you? My daughter has scans tomorrow they have booked a follow up appointment for the 3rd feb. Xx hope you are feeling better.  Lots of love x

  • I've still got pain but it's not quite 2 wks after surgery so it's slow , slept better last night tho , hope all goes well tomoro is it ct and mri ? Xxx

  • Yes she has a ct and mri.  Her last chemo was really hard for her but she rang thst bell.  I just hope and pray chemo has worked and shrunk the tumour.  I was with them Friday and she was good she looked lovely both me and my son said she has put weight on which is good xx

  • Hi Cam, and everyone.

Just realised I didn't post on here, post-MDT.

I hope you're all doing OK.

So, the cancer nurse phoned me post-MDT. The short version: no signs of any spread to other organs (which is a relief); tumour is adenocarcinoma (which I'm told is the most common, and that's good); they think a couple of lymphs (I think?) Look a little enlarged, so they want to do  PET scan next to decide whether to go straight to surgery or do some oncology first as they're close to the tumour).

So, overall, fairly good news, in the grand scheme of things, I think.

I'm sure I'll be having more detailed discussions with the hospital soon, and am lucky to have an option for a 2nd opinion.

I don't know enough about it, as I don't want to go down Google rabbitholes and scare myself, but I would imagine chemo/radio/immuno would make sense to reduce tumour size, pre-op, and reduce the likelihood of needing a stoma. Does that sound right? They seem to be leaning towards surgery first and I'm worried about stoma (whilst still overall being relieved they're confident of effective treatment, and looking like no spread)

  • Hoping and praying for good news back from the scans, Nic.

  • Hi James your story almost mirrors mine , I had 4 cycles chemo then surgery , the stoma was my worst nightmare but thank god by some miracle I got away with it ! Although it was nailed on I would end up with one , but that's not something at this point you need to think about I know I didn't, I just put that to bk of my mind and focused on the chemo, hope all goes well will be thinking of you xx

  • Thank you.  Your news sounds positive so please for you.  My daughter found chemo tough but she got there.  We are anxious about the results from her scans and her surgery.  Her tumour is fairly low down so she thinks more than likely will be a stoma bag x
