2 Week Referral for Ovarian Cyst

I have just been diagnosed with a decent sized cyst on my right ovary (6.4cm largest diameter). It was described as multi- locular , thick walled and haemorrhagic and my GP has put me on a 2 week urgent referral. In his words, he isn’t overly concerned that it is anything sinister but that the gynae wait times in my area are nearly 12 months for routine referrals. He said that given the size he’s confident it’ll need to come out and the sooner the better.

In terms of symptoms, all I had was really bad cramping for 3 days just after my period. I have always had heavy, painful periods (which has been the case since I was 13 so nothing new) so no changes there. He suspected endometriosis and only sent me for the scan to be thorough, I am glad he did. The cyst seems to be an incidental finding to the pain, as if the pain was from the cyst it would have most likely have twisted or burst which isn’t the case as the pain resolved.

I am panicking a little now, I am only 26 and this has come as a shock. I work in an industry that is allied to medicine so I know what an urgent referral means. He has referred me for a CA125 test, but I know this isn’t confirmatory. I know that a haemorrhagic cyst in someone with heavy periods is most likely to be an endometrioma but I can’t help worrying. Has anyone had any similar experiences to this? I think I just want to write my thoughts down.

  • I'm going through almost exactly the same and have a 6cm blood filled cyst on my left ovary. I've been in hospital twice because of the pain and recently had a ca125 test which is raised and an MRI last week that I'm waiting on results of. I think the two week pathway is likely to be longer but at least I'm on it and not on the 12 month routine gynae list.

Similarly to you one of the drs I have seen in hospital doesn't think it is cancer but until someone says 100% that it's not it's hard not to worry.

  • I’m sorry that you’re going through the same thing, it’s awful not knowing. If I hadn’t of had the random cramping I wouldn’t have even known I had a cyst so I’m glad it was found. I realise I’ll be waiting for a while to find out exactly what it is. I am a bit upset at the fact that if they do remove the cyst and they still think it’s suspicious they may have to take the ovary with it. I do want children and have been with my partner for a long time but it’s not really something we wanted to think about now. I hope you get the answers you need, have you had your appointment with gynae yet?

  • Not yet. I'm hoping to get an appointment through soon so that I can find out my MRI results which should help give a clearer picture. I could just do with a plan of action really then I at least know what I'm dealing with.

Sorry that you've got the additional worry of what impact it might have on you having children as well. That must add an extra layer to it all for you too.

  • I hope you get an appointment soon. At least you have had the MRI so they should have a lot of information to come up with a plan at the appointment. I am still waiting for my referral to come through, I’m not sure whether it’ll be an MRI first or see the consultant.

  • I’ve just had a similar experience and I am 1 week post opp for removal of a borderline ovarian tumour but still waiting on the biopsy coming through …

Started with bloating and slight cramping and put it down to maybe a food intolerance visited a doctor who organised a lot of tests the last one was the ultrasound which picked up a cyst on my right ovary then was sent for a mri which then picked up a tumour instead … after that I got fast tracked down the two week path and from consultations to signing forms it was out with 2 months they suspected a 8cm mass however came out as a 13 cm mass … please try not worry which I know is very hard as I went through many emotions .. I’m just glad it’s out now and hoping the results don’t take long xx

  • Thanks for the reply! I hope you make a speedy recovery from your surgery. I hope your results come back soon and they are good, I’ll be thinking of you.

Do you mind me asking what sort of surgery you had (key hole or open) and what they took (just the tumour, tumour and ovary or additional things like lymph nodes)? How are you finding recovery so far?

I had a call from the GP Monday and am seeing the gynae this Tuesday, I am so pleased with the quick response. I realise I will probably be having an MRI at some point (I’m not sure if this will be on Tuesday as I only received a text with time and location of appointment).

Unlike you, I had virtually no symptoms other than the three days of bad cramping after a period this past month. The only reason the GP sent me for an ultrasound is because I mentioned I had always had heavy and painful periods and he suspected endometriosis. He was surprised that they found such a cyst when the results came back. Now I think back, I can’t help feeling like the fact I have heavy, painful periods masked any symptoms of the cyst. I am just glad we have found it because the GP could have very easily just put it down to my periods and not ordered the test.

Unless my cyst is very obviously an endometrioma, I think I’ll be in the same position as you and won’t know until it comes out. I have accepted this is a likely scenario and that I may well lose an ovary. When you haven’t had any children yet that is a scary prospect but me and partner have accepted this may happen.

Thank you for reaching out, sending hugs x

  • I hope your appointment gets things moving for you next week. I've had my results back from MRI and it's severe endometriosis that is impacting my bowel as well. Very relieved that it isn't cancer but possibly facing a hysterectomy as they asked if my family is complete. Fortunately I'm in a position at 40 to answer that with a confident yes. Next step consultant and then hopefully on the list for surgery before I'm back in A&E again! X

  • Thankyou … I ended up having lapascopic and open so got 5 lovely cuts on my stomach … I’ve had two children so they reopened my c section and then went through my stomach … I ended up having one ovary the tumour and a fallapion tube took out … recovery is not going to bad tbh the first few days I literally could not move or sit up but each day it’s getting slightly easier … when you have your discussion with the surgeon they will ask about your future and kids and there aim is to take as little at first depending on the mri … because I’m only 36 he didn’t want me to go through menopause yet … but if my biopsy results come back bad then they may have to take more xx

  • Hi Quinn24,

Sorry to hear you are in this position. Thought I'd reach out as I am in a similar position to you - I have been diagnosed with a 14cm complex cyst on my right ovary. Mine too is multioculated and part of it contains blood. However, my CA125 is normal. They are not sure at the moment whether it is cancerous or not so I am currently waiting for surgery, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I have also got a thickened womb lining so also having that investigated in the same surgery.

Hope your appointment goes ok - when I had mine, my MRI was 2 days later so hopefully the wait won't be too long for you if that is what you need.

  • Hi Dannii16

Hope your recovery is going well. It sounds like our situations are similar - I am waiting for surgery to remove my 14cm cyst and ovary/tube. I've been told they are going to try keyhole but they may well have to swap to open.

I hope you don't mind me asking - how did you find the surgery? Were you told before hand it could end up being either? How long were you in hospital for?

    x
