Worried about prep before colonoscopy

Hi everyone! I'm a 31 Yr old female, I've been having problems now since 2018. The GPS kept saying ibs.. so a couple months back I decided to see a different gp, he gave me the fit test, which came back slightly elevated at 13.think the limit should be 10.

So have been referred for a colonoscopy,  my referral got cancelled by the hospital as I freaked out  got re referred and now I can't get the department to answer their phone too book an appointment!

I think my biggest question here is about the Prep!

My biggest worry is I'll have an accident on the way to the hospital, its a 45 minute drive ‍ can someone please put me at ease here!

I also think I'm going to have to opt for no sedation as I have 2 young children with additional needs who will need me after the colonoscopy.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks x

  • If you have followed the dietry guidelines in the days leading up to taking the prep and try and take it in the right timeframe, you should be ok. It is hard to drink as it tastes awful. I chased it down with black coffee. I have had morning appointments, so did the prep the night before. I couldn't actually get to sleep as I was still needing to go to the loo until 5am. So, you could start the prep earlier, as long as you don't eat and stop drinking water at the right time.

  • Hi thanks for your reply. I was actually wondering if I should start the prep earlier when I get it. But didn't know if that would be ok. I'm aiming for a morning appointment so I can get the prep over with. If am honest the prep is worrying me more than colonoscopy

  • As long as your bowel is clear and you can manage the hunger, I would have thought it is ok. TBH, the prep is pretty bad lol, and yes, it's worse than the colonoscopy. Wear some loose fitting clothes with no belts and stay close to the bathroom.

  • I don't eat much anyway because of the problems I'm having  so think I can deal with the hunger lol.

I also feel sick almost all the time, so worried I'm going to puke the prep up lol.

  • It is usually flavoured, but tastes pretty bad. If you have ever had movicol before, that's all it is. Drinking black coffee helps cleanse the palette.

  • I'll try a black tea.

I've actually never tried anything that acts a laxitive. But I guess I'll understand what my little girl has to go through as she has to have movicol every few days and lactulose daily!! Really not looking forward to this bowel prep one bit

  • Hi there is another sort of prep you can ask for, you can do at home or just before your appointment if you arrange it before time. Its a small plastic bottle with a long nozzle which you insert and squeeze. Within a minute you feel you want to go in three your going and i mean going. I did mine at home and had an hours journey and waiting to go in and everything fine. I found bit of discomfort but very little pain. Gas is pumped in to enlarge the way for the camera.

Hope things go well for you and good results.

Ps reason i had bottle was i have stomach problems and drinking alot and its back up.

  • I had my first colonoscopy on friday just gone, i had to drink 3 cups of laxatives the day before at 10am, 2pm, and 6pm with just clear liquids and no food. My appointment was at 8.30pm the next day (i got really lucky there) but by the morning of the appointment there was truly nothing left so had no problems. Hopefully you'll have a similar experience so by the day of - you'll be fine. I was very anxious over the whole thing but the staff were amazing, it wasn't my favourite experience ever - but so much better than i imagined. Hoping it all goes similar for you. Good luck x

  • My tip for the prep is to have a glass of water at the side of you. After enery gulp of prep have a sip of water to get rid of the taste.

Also you'll have done with the loo by the time you set off.

Good luck ask for gas & air if you're not having sedation.

  • I was worried aswell about having an accident on the way. I had a morning appointment so drank both my laxative drinks the evening before. I pooed most of it out in the evening. Then slept and woke up early in the morning to poo a little bit out. Then got ready and went. No accidents. I was worried that there was still going to be some left in my colon but thankfully they said my bowel prep was excellent.

My biggest tip would be to make sure to drink plenty of water to clean everything out. I think I had 2 litres of water and 2 litres of that laxative drink. Also the laxative drink tastes awful but my second was so much better because it was chilled for longer so make sure to keep it in the fridge. My biggest fear is being sick and I felt like I was going to be sick with the 1st one that wasn't that chilled so the 2nd one felt so much better with it being more chilled and I was able to drink it faster.

Hope everything goes okay! My FIT result was 400 (they described it as 'there was some blood found in your poo test' -  I wonder what a high result would be considered as!) and everything was fine, I just had internal piles.
