Newbie…unsure/in denial?

Hi all,

First post so would really appreciate your thoughts. I've got a results appointment this Friday after waiting nearly 3 weeks since visiting the 'one stop shop' and this week is dragging as you can imagine.

In short, went to GP after finding a lump in my left boob and was seen in the breast clinic 3 days later (so lucky I know to be seen so quickly). Not long into the ultrasound the consultant said he thought  the lump was suspicious, and later said the mammogram done that day confirmed the same. They did biopsies of the lump and lymph node...and put a metal clip marker in...and I'm currently awaiting the results.
He told me on the same day they would look to do a reduction though at this stage not clear whether chemo would be done before or after.

So...I would be so grateful for your insight into what questions I should be asking on Friday. As you can probably tell this is all completely new and unfamiliar territory. This time a fortnight ago I was planning my return to work after a year on maternity leave, and of course this is all now up in the air. I have a baby girl who has just had her first birthday.

Also (perhaps I'm in a bit of denial!), what are the chances the biopsy could come back clear? That is, can false positives happen whereby the ultrasounds and mammograms show something suspicious that actually turns out to be benign? I have no first degree relatives with BC and am 33.

Thanks for taking the time to read this! Xx

  • Hi Blujo88

Didn't want to skip by your post without replying , hope you're ok xx

I had a similar initial experience to you being referred to the one stop clinic after finding a lump in my right breast. Had just returned to work after mat leave with my second boy.

Was a complete shock needing uss mammogram and biopsy at the clinic- wasn't very well prepared and actually fainted when there with it all!

The team there wouldn't give anything away to me with regards to what they thought the lump was - kept saying I had to wait for biopsy results. I read lots on here about all sorts of things and there were lots of ladies who's lumps weren't cancer.

The waiting for results is horrendous.

I hope Friday comes round quickly for you.

There is so much support on here for whatever the lump turns out to be. Main thing is thst you found it, didn't ignore it and got the wheels in motion quickly

All the best, sending love xx

  • Hi and thanks so much for your kind words. Will feel much better come Friday, even if it is malignant. I think it's the not knowing and not having a plan which I'm finding hard.

That sounds so similar to my appointments where the default answer after seeing the 'suspicious' scans was that we need to wait for the biopsy. It's fair enough as these things obviously take time but I think a part of me thought if I ask them enough times they might be able to give me a definitive answer to shut me up haha.

Thank you, and I agree this place is so supportive.
Will update with what they say in my results appointment.
All the best for now xx

  • Morning,

Definitely waiting not knowing the results is very difficult. If the biopsy does confirm cancer there's then more scans they need to do which again means waiting in limbo. I found that the hardest time.

Brace yourself for the worse sounds like that's what they're preparing you for - especially if they've said there's lymph node involvement.

I'll be thinking of you - always here if you want to chat xx
