Breast Lump Biopsy wait

Hello,

Im 38 and I had a biopsy on Wednesday (31st). At first the consultant examined me and said he thought the lump was a fibroadenoma. Once the scan started they asked if they could do a mammogram which worried me straight away. Once the mammogram had been completed I was told that they weren't happy with the presentation of the lump (irregular with calcification) so would need a biopsy.

I was told I would have a face to face appointment more or less 2 weeks to the day after. On Friday (2nd) I received a letter online inviting me to an appointment on 26th September!! Surely the biopsy results aren't back yet and that would be over 3 weeks since? Has anyone else had this?

Trying to stay positive and keep busy but it's so hard

Thanks

  • Hi @laraj

@laraj thanks for your message. Glad to hear you are doing well although I can imagine that the coming or going around chemotherapy is frustrating.  I think people thought I was worried about having chemo when I was anxious about the waiting but in actual fact I was fine about having it (obviously I was worried about impact on my family) but I was nore anxious about sitting round waiting when I just want it out now.

Got an appointment on Monday with the surgeon to discuss the procedure, it'll be lumpectomy, lymph nodes and some kind of manipulation of tissue to 'fill the void' (his words!) As its 3cm I imagine it's going to leave a dent!

I'm doing better today because I have an appointment.  Hope they can give me a surgery date but not going to get my hopes up. They've said it'll be in around 4 weeks so the wait continues.

How long will you have to wait before they confirm if chemo is happening? How did you find recovering from surgery?

    X

  • So pleased you got result least can move forward hope Monday goes ok to you have any idea what they are going to say with surgery?

I feel quite anxious today my biopsy was two weeks ago on Friday so trying keep waiting.

Did you get your results on a phone call did you say.

Big hug to you you're doing amazing it's all so much to take in. What area are you from xx

  • @k86

@k86 I'm guessing he will talk me through the procedure itself. It'll be lumpectomy, removal of some lymph nodes and some tissue manipulation as there will be a big space where lump is (its currently 3cm). I've got loads of questions written down too. My notebook has now become my cancer book!!

Do you have a number for the clinic you could call, I had a letter literally days after with an appointment date but they called me to bring my appointment forward. See if you can give them a call it may help even if they tell you results aren't back yet at least you know? With bank holiday and postal strikes recently would be worth just checking nothing has gone missing in the post

    I'm birmingham, what about u?

  • I'm wimborne Dorset be thinking of you Monday what times your appointment.

That's a good idea I might ring it Friday then thats two weeks.

Did they say much to you on the time of scan and biopsy?

How are you feeling in general xx big big hugs to you x

  • Thank you

When you say dud they say how much? Do you mean did they tell me how big? If so, I received a letter summarising my appointment , so ultrasound, mammogram biopsy and there it said 30mm

I'm ok in general, I'm knackered but put that down to the mental stress of it all. Want to get the date through so I can start planning what we will need. If we're looking at 4 weeks it may be when the kids are on half term which could be a blessing as less of a strain getting them up and to school. Saying that I do have support if needed, people really want to help which I'm very fortunate but I just need to let them and stop being a control freak! Haha

  • I'd be exactly the same always like to have everything written on calendar lol yeah in a way no school runs could be a good thing. How's your partner coping too.

Sorry might on the scan did they say much of what they thought at the time.

Bet you will be so relieved when Monday is out the way is anyone going with you xxx

  • My husband is coping OK, he doesn't like to say Cancer but I don't think anyone does. It's a big word!

When I had the scan he straight away asked if he could do a mammogram which worried me as I thought it'd be a scan and off on my way.

Once the mammogram was done he just said he wasn't happy with it as it was irregular in shape and had some calcification so wanted to do biopsy. Told me to keep an open mind. I was just frustrated that I had been referred back in March for my other breast (turned out to be blocked duct) and I asked them if they scan both as I was concerned about a bump and skin change but they said no they'd only scan the symptomatic one :-(

Did you get any feedback whilst you were there?

  • Aww that must've been so hard. They didn't get too much away on ultrasound the lady said as I'm 36 good sign and the lump is quite round.

My husband's the same he's been so supportive sat in waiting room on biopsy and I kept saying why don't you get a cup of tea and he said no I'd rather wait   how are you coping with operation coming up can't lie in quite nervous of needles so keep worrying of being in hospitals etc xxx

  • That sounds positive! I'm 38 (39 in a few weeks) felt odd them saying I was young but I guess in terms of this we are very young.

Surgery doesn't phase me really, I had an op in April this year on my other breast to remove the duct. I've also had gall bladder removed and 2 c-sections so it's just another scar! Haha probably shouldn't be so flippant but it's got to come out so I'm ready for it.

Keep yourself in the here and now and focus on getting your result first. Cross any bridges in terms of hospitals when you need to. Do you have things that pass the time? Jig saw puzzles, box sets, crafts etc? It won't take your mind off it fully but if it makes time go quicker that helps.

Let me know how it goes when you call on Friday or if you hear anything before.

Always here to chat. We have got this!!! X

  • You too thank you yes trying keep busy with coursework helping and I'm a carer.

My last operatin was 14 years ago c section with my son and was emergency c section so think maybe hospitals make me a bit nervous even get a bit scared of being put to sleep lol.

Always here keep me updated xx
