Very high FIT test result

Hello all,

I'm a 50+ man and got the result of my second FIT test yesterday. To be honest am feeling a bit freaked out - actually majorly freaked out. Reason for the test was that I've had intermittent mild abdominal pain for about 6 months. I assumed it was a muscular problem when clearly it wasn't.

The result of the first test was over 900 and the second around 1000. So there's little doubt there's blood in the samples (even though none was visible). My GP has made an urgent referral to the colorectal clinic at the hospital. It's hard not to google things like this when you're in shock (have tried to only read stuff from reputable sources), and I understand that there are a number of things that can be causing blood in the stool: ulcers, polyps, hemorrhoids as well as cancer. Though looking through different forums, I've not seen anyone report figures like this and things feel pretty bleak today.

Not really sure why I'm writing this, as I realise nothing new will be known until I get the referral/have colonoscopy. Maybe it's just to know that other people are going through the same thing, or even just understand what I'm talking about. Thanks for reading :)

  • In case it helps anyone: have had colonoscopy and two sigmoidoscopy (feels similar) and about 10 polyps removed since the high FIT test. None of the polyps have been cancerous.
So just to say that a high fit test result doesn’t always mean the worst. Take care

  • So grateful to come across this note and appreciate your sharing it. I've just had a positive FIT test of over 400. Been Googling far too much and got myself in a bit of a state.
I have a colonoscopy booked for Sunday 30th and you're all right. The waiting and thinking is horrific for both me and my husband.
Good and reassuring to hear lots of you get positive outcomes.

  • Hi Everyone, I found this thread after googling Iin sheer panic. Had a few bowel issues lately,, but I've never been regular. I eventually went to doctor as blood & mucus was obvious along with urge cy & not always making it to toilet in time. My FIT came back at >400 which i know is high. Im not panicking so much that I'm not really sleeping. I just cannot concentrate on anything, I'm dreading my colonoscopy in one way, but I another I wish it could be done tomorrow so at least I know what I'm dealing with.

  • Have you been for your Colonoscopy yet?

  • Hi Shaz1975, please try not to panic whilst waiting. That is easier said than done, but beleive me when i say that in the recovery area after colonoscopy, most were diagnosed as ok. I was the onky one not clear.

The waiting for results will seem endless & drive you crazy sorry, but you wouldn't be human if that wasn't the case.

I have been diagnosed with bowel & liver cancer. I have just completed a round of Radiotherapy & will start chemo on 7th Nov.

I am keeping myself active by walking at least a mile usually more on my treadmill at home, as this helps focus my mind as well.

If you are able to keep active ease do, it will help you in mind as well as body.

Please let me know how you get on with your colonoscopy. Xxx

  • Really sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Im Just glad that even 2 years on people are finding this thread helpful.

  • Ahhh gosh so sorry to hear about your diagnoses.  You are so right.  I am praying for you.  I know you are going to beat this!!! I am trying to live my life normally.  I have an 9 year old son who I just live for. I will let you know how the colonoscopy goes.  I am on the waiting list and it could take up to 4 months before it's done xxx

  • Because my trst was high i was referred for a 2 week colonoscopy, if you are on a waiting list which could take up to 4 months I would  imagine your trst result was marginally up which as many say could be polyps etc. I know that feels like a long wait, but they must be of the opinion it is low enough to be ok.

Just keep an eye on yourself in the meantime & if you notice anything different in you bowel habits or darker stool/ visible blood go back to your doctor rather than wait the 4 months.

I am fighting this with all I have, my children are older but have 4 grandchildren, youngest is 1 on 1st chemo day. I have to fight for all of  them, my husband, parents, sisters & myself. Daily Snapchat from all my little bug carriers are going to help me focus my mind though my chemo  so I can see them properly when my immunity is back up xxx

  • Best of luck with fighting this wretched disease.

  • I just received a call from the hospital in Glasgow and they said the next available appointment is 7th November.  I am very glad the appointment has been scheduled and can get it over and done with and sorted if anything needs sorted.  Thinking of you and please keep us updated on how you are doing through your treatment xxx

  • Hope your appointment on 7th Nov goes okay and results come through quickly.

I had ct colongraph on 20th October and waiting for results is hard. I feel fine and sense things will be okay but need to know either way.

Its good have a forum like this to discuss feelings with  people experiencing the same thing. I have just joined so not sure what you have been going through but pray the outcome is positive.

  • Hi Shaz, I hope your sppoint.ent has gone ok today, please do updaye me when you are able to xxx

I think some cold air caught my breath & then I panicked at the thought of going home with my husband, not having any medics around. Still i am ok & being waited on.

  • Hello Flower. My appointment went well. I am so glad it's over. They found diverticulitis and mild inflammation, which they took samples to biopsy. They said it looks like microscopic colitis. The colonoscopy was a wee bit uncomfortable but took deep it was ok. I was actually crying to one of the nurses as they took me into the ward. They made me feel at ease. The NHS staff  in Glasgow are soooo amazing. I am so glad that your first chemo infusion went ok. You will definitely get through this. You have a fighting spirit, and I will be on this chat here to cheer you on!! Xxx

  • Shaz, I am so pleased for you. You can now breathe with relief. Now time to start enjoying yourself again xx

  • Thank you, Flower. I am hugely relieved but will continue with the annual screenings offered. My gran had bowel cancer and my mum has had issues on and off with her bowels. She is now 83. My dad who is 87, bless him, went for a colonoscopy in September this year to the same hospital. He was so relaxed about it all. So it seemed. He has diverticulitis too and haemorrhoids and few polyps removed. I knew what to expect then as he went through the process. Keep me updated on your treatment, Flower. I am rooting for you xxx
