Very high FIT test result

Hello all,

I'm a 50+ man and got the result of my second FIT test yesterday. To be honest am feeling a bit freaked out - actually majorly freaked out. Reason for the test was that I've had intermittent mild abdominal pain for about 6 months. I assumed it was a muscular problem when clearly it wasn't.

The result of the first test was over 900 and the second around 1000. So there's little doubt there's blood in the samples (even though none was visible). My GP has made an urgent referral to the colorectal clinic at the hospital. It's hard not to google things like this when you're in shock (have tried to only read stuff from reputable sources), and I understand that there are a number of things that can be causing blood in the stool: ulcers, polyps, hemorrhoids as well as cancer. Though looking through different forums, I've not seen anyone report figures like this and things feel pretty bleak today.

Not really sure why I'm writing this, as I realise nothing new will be known until I get the referral/have colonoscopy. Maybe it's just to know that other people are going through the same thing, or even just understand what I'm talking about. Thanks for reading :)

  • In case it helps anyone: have had colonoscopy and two sigmoidoscopy (feels similar) and about 10 polyps removed since the high FIT test. None of the polyps have been cancerous.
So just to say that a high fit test result doesn’t always mean the worst. Take care

  • So grateful to come across this note and appreciate your sharing it. I've just had a positive FIT test of over 400. Been Googling far too much and got myself in a bit of a state.
I have a colonoscopy booked for Sunday 30th and you're all right. The waiting and thinking is horrific for both me and my husband.
Good and reassuring to hear lots of you get positive outcomes.

  • SueCC yes it sounds like it. It'd almost like he's been programmed to switch off from certain things maybe? I wish I was like that!

  • Jenny 3109,that's good that yours turned out to be northing. The only thing that worries me a little is I occasionally get blood when wiping, but you think the worst don't you. My toilet habits have always been a bit erratic as well depending on what I eat. My wife thinks I have ibs as its been going on for years. I mentioned it to the doctor the other week and she did say that it's likely I have it,but it would be nice to get a proper diagnosis.

MargaretMary,my reply at the top was for you but it doesn't seem to let me reply direct!

  • Hi, so I have recently turned 22 and for the last 1.5 years been having problems in my lower left bowel. I’ve been brushed off with all my symptoms as “I’m too young” and I got told to do a FIT test where my result was 200. I’m very scared. I have pain the area, which hasn’t been as bad for the last 6 months so I just trusted what doctors said about not being concerned, however, now I know there’s blood in my poo has me worried. I’ve also got a hard mass in the area. I know it might not be cancer but hearing about the rise in colon cancer in people my age has me worried, also the fact is been an ongoing problem for 1.5 years. I’m being referred to the hospital in 2 weeks then for a colonoscopy. Hearing some people having 800+ though makes me less worried but it’s still stressing me out a lot.

  • I’m 37 & can’t help but read & worry! All symptoms that I have mentioned at various times since getting Covid for 2 weeks not needing hospitalisation. It caused me a new mountain of problem after problem!
due to age I was not even offered a fit test until recently having also emphasised extreme weight loss with sickness.
you will hear soon & at least get basic answers that same day- peace of mind to some degree (hopefully?!)

take care & keep in touch

    C Xx

  • Yeah in a weird way I just want to know now. I can’t think or function properly. I just keep looking at my kids.
I am deffo overthinking it though and google and obsessing over it now.
yesterday I had a mini panic attack I do suffer with anxiety as it now this on top of it

  • The best advice I can give to any of you is to not panic as it really could be anything. The chances of it being anything sinister are quite small.

Google is the worst place to look as everything on there seems to point to the worst case scenario. If I go through anything like this again Google is something ill definitely avoid.

I know the anxiety is an absolute nightmare but you have to try and get on with your life in the meantime until you get to the root cause of the problem.

Nearly 18 months after my diagnosis I still occasionally see a bit of blood but I know this is down to what I've been diagnosed with. Unfortunately there's no cure. Medication everyday helps keep that at bay. Obviously if it started to get a lot worse I'd go back to my gp.

I hope you all get through this though and are fine. I really do know how you feel.

    Best of luck.

  • Hi Everyone, I found this thread after googling Iin sheer panic. Had a few bowel issues lately,, but I've never been regular. I eventually went to doctor as blood & mucus was obvious along with urge cy & not always making it to toilet in time. My FIT came back at >400 which i know is high. Im not panicking so much that I'm not really sleeping. I just cannot concentrate on anything, I'm dreading my colonoscopy in one way, but I another I wish it could be done tomorrow so at least I know what I'm dealing with.

  • Have you been for your Colonoscopy yet?

  • Hi Shaz1975, please try not to panic whilst waiting. That is easier said than done, but beleive me when i say that in the recovery area after colonoscopy, most were diagnosed as ok. I was the onky one not clear.

The waiting for results will seem endless & drive you crazy sorry, but you wouldn't be human if that wasn't the case.

I have been diagnosed with bowel & liver cancer. I have just completed a round of Radiotherapy & will start chemo on 7th Nov.

I am keeping myself active by walking at least a mile usually more on my treadmill at home, as this helps focus my mind as well.

If you are able to keep active ease do, it will help you in mind as well as body.

Please let me know how you get on with your colonoscopy. Xxx

  • Really sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Im Just glad that even 2 years on people are finding this thread helpful.
