CIN3 spread to Vaginal walls

So having a bit of a meltdown! First smear test came back positive for high risk HPV and severe cell changes. Lots of symptoms to go with it too.

Went in for colposcopy, biopsy with the intention of a LLETZ to be done to remove it the same day.

Colposcopy dye showed the abnormal cells covered the whole cervix and that it has spread to the vaginal walls surrounding and further down so they decided best to put me under to remove.

Anxiously awaiting biopsy results but wanted to ask if anyone else had had similar and it not come back from biopsy as cancerous? There isnt much on the internet in terms of CIN spreading like that.

I am awaiting a date for surgery to remove it as they cant do a LLETZ on the walls apparently due to the walls being much thinner than the cervix.

Know I should probably wait for the biopsy result, but mind is running away with trying to understand how it could spread like that without it being more advanced...

Any advice appreciated ️

  • Hi Ellen and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry the cell changes couldn't be removed at your colposcopy but fingers crossed it won't be long until an appointment comes through for your surgery.

It is hard to keep the mind and those nervous thoughts under control when waiting for results but I hope this article on how to cope with waiting for news will help.

I'm sure some of our members who will offer their support and advice to you soon but our team of cancer nurses are just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to talk things through with them as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Ellen,

I'm genuinely really sorry to hear about your news - this must be really weighing on your mind and undoubtedly a lot to think about. I hope that you have since received the support and treatment needed to work through this along with a positive outcome.

Unfortunately I'm in a similar situation myself, waiting for surgery in a couple of weeks time. At my initial colposcopy appointment the consultant advised that I had CIN1 but following a biopsy it was confirmed as CIN3 and spread to other areas (VAIN1) and so I'm no long eligible for the LLETZ treatment.

Like you, I'm struggling to find much information on CIN3 spreading to other areas and what this means for me. The hospital we're quite open ended with their advice. They said that they will try to remove with laser under general anaesthesic but that it isn't always 100% successful and other treatments may be required such as a hysterectomy as a last resort. I'm 32 and really want to have children and I feel like im going out of my mind with worry. I'd be really grateful for any further information you'd feel comfortable sharing if you have since received further advice etc.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Ellen

I've had troublesome smears since my first one at age 25. Like you I had CIN 3 on my cervix and I was diagnosed with HPV. This spread onto the wall of my vagina....this is called VAIN and is graded in the same way (1, 2, 3). I had a general anaesthetic and had this removed as a day case. It came back as VAIN 3 which like CIN 3 is high grade changes but not cancer. Once this was removed my consultant just kept an eye on me and had me back for smears every 6 months.

Unfortunately last October I was diagnosed with Vulva cancer. It's like it's making its way out of my body lol. So far I've had 2 ops and have just started radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

I noticed that your post is from a few months ago so hopefully you've had your results. Fingers crossed everything turned out okay for you. I'm here if you want a chat.

    Take care. Xx
