Failed hysteroscopy, Now need it doing under GA

Good afternoon ladies,

I am just after some words of advice and of comfort really.
I am 44 years of age and post menopausal. I had brown discharge last week and a bit of spotting. No periods for over 5 years. I was sent for a scan and it came back as 5mm thickening. A hysteroscopy was then requested.I have been for this today.  The lovely lady doctor said she couldn't complete the hysteroscopy because my cervix are tiny (her words) I have never been pregnant and don't have any children. She said she'd be going in blind and would need to size up on her instrument ‍♀️ 3 or 4 sizes bigger. She did not want to go any further. She said she was going to speak to another specialist for me to have it done under General anaesthetic.
I have read some not nice things on the menopause matters pages about this procedure. I have never been put under ga and just concerned about the process. I really wanted it done today after trying to stay positive about the whole thing. I feel disappointed it wasn't able to be done and to get some answers to it all.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post

  • Hi Tori and welcome to the community.

I'm really sorry to hear that your hysteroscopy wasn't able to be completed on Friday and that you will now be having it under GA.

I hope this information we have about general anaesthesia and what will happen during the hysteroscopy will help put your mind at ease but if you'd prefer to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and will do all they can to answer any questions you may have.

I hope your surgery goes well when the time comes and you're finally able to get some answers.

    Kind regards,

  • HI sorry you had a failed attempt

I havent got alot of time but felt i need t say

5mm is normal thickness for post menopause and if there were no lumps on the scans indicating polyp or fibroids I am wodnering why they feel the need

if you are dead set against having it done under a general they can give you a vaginal pessary 2 hours before to relax everyhting down there

ask your options dont be forced into doing something without a) knowing why they want to do it and why they think you would be at risk etc and b) different proceedure options that suit you .. your a person not a number
