Prostate Cancer just confirmed

Good evening

My dad had his biopsy a couple of weeks ago, and today I took the call from the consultant who was so cold and very rude.  He gave me less than 5 minutes of his time, and was in such a rush to get me off the phone.
He said I am sure you are aware your father has cancer.  I don't think he was going to give me my dad's scores, then he said so fast 4+4 and 4+3, so 7 and 8 Gleason.  I asked could he repeat to make sure I had it correct he said no I will be sending it in the post.  He said there will be a letter in the post for bone scan.  I asked what T marking, if bone scan was ok.  He said T2c.
My head is really all over the place, but want to be positive for my dad.

Can anyone tell me if the scores are curable?

many thanks

Jackie

  • Hi Jackie.   I'm surprised you don't complain about consultant and his attitude.

I'm not medically trained just a cancer patient one of our forum regulars is [@telemando]‍  he knows alot more than me about prostate cancer , despite me having it I was diagnosed Feb 2016  I'm T3B N1 M1B Gleason 8 , was PSA 1580 .

You don't say what his PSA is. Hopefully it'll be in letter when it comes,(some letters can take over a month). hope things go well with your dad take care keep positive. Please keep in touch.

    Billy

  • Thank you for your reply.  Yes I think you are right I think I will make a complaint, more for the fact that he doesn't do this to other people.

My dad's psa was 9.23, my real worry is now waiting for the bone scan.
The consultant said the mri looks like it is contained, but that mri was done nearly a month ago and this could have changed by now.

He said the bone scan won't be for another two weeks and then probably the same amount of time for the results.  So another month of this waiting.

  • Hi Finn1707.

I see that my old pal Billygoatt name checked me over a month ago.  Sorry for not replying sooner, but for some reason I'm no longer getting email reminders for this forum, and as a result I haven't dropped by for a while.

I'm most definitely not a doctor but I had early stage prostate cancer back in 2010 and I've picked up a little bit of knowledge along the way.  My cancer was treated by a robotic radical prostatectomy, and obviously I'm still here.  My PSA was 6, my Gleason was 3+4 and, after surgery, the cancer was T2C (cancer in both sides).

Obviously a lot depends on the bone scan, but my initial thought was that your Dad's cancer should be curable by surgery or radiotherapy.  He might need further treatment afterwards, but there is every reason for cautious hope.

  • Hi Telemando

can I please ask for your advice as you may well know more about this.

When my dad had his psa test in May he also had a full blood test where his serum ferritin (iron) came back high, he was asked to repeat this a week later and it had come down by a hundred but was still high.  They asked my dad to repeat in 6 weeks which he did this week.  It is still high, should be under 400 but is 749.

Do you know if my dad's prostate cancer could be causing this to be high?

    many thanks

    jackie

  • Hi Jackie.

I must remind you I'm not a doctor and I'm certainly no expert when comes to matters like this.

There are some papers suggesting a connection between prostate cancer and high ferritin levels, but it's early days and more research needs to be done.  Whether your dad's ferritin level has any significance in the context of prostate cancer is something that's well outside my knowledge.

  • Thank you for replying.
Just so worrying when looking on Google at what it could be.  I will try and speak to a doctor on Monday.

    thank you again

  • It's probably best to avoid Google.
