Recent prostate cancer diagnosis

 Hello

I have recently been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, Gleason score of 4+3, PSA of 6.2 at the age of 58.

MRI indicates that it has hopefully not spread but am having phone call tomorrow with consultant re Bone scan results.

I joined the forum a few days ago but this is my first post. I did have something witty to post but a nocturnal visit to the loo temporarily robbed me of my sense of humour!!

A favourite piece of advice I often give is that you can't cross a bridge until you get there!! And I have learnt the truth of this in the last few months.

Assuming tomorrow goes ok I will be considering and deciding on my course of treatment v soon. I am leaning towards surgery rather than radiation therapy.

I am not asking for advice as the decision will need to be mine and I will live with the outcomes. I know my family will also.

I'm relatively young, reasonably active and fit. I work full-time and am a carer for my wife when home.

Any words of by wisdom or things to consider would be greatly appreciated.

Take care and hopefully speak soon.

  • Hi Telemando

can I please ask you, as you have a lot of knowledge.

Before being diagnosed or having treatment for prostate cancer can it cause a person to feel a lot of weakness, like you could be out walking and just feel weak that you need to sit down, not tired just a feeling of weakness in your body?

just that my dad has been feeling like this for over a year.

Nothing showing  up in his blood tests, and feels like this most of the day.

    many thanks

  • Hi Jackie.

Just for the record, I'm not a doctor and so I can't talk about this with any authority, but to the best of my understanding...

Most prostate cancer patients have no idea there's a problem - until they have a PSA blood test which reveals the shocking truth.  In the early to fairly advanced stages, prostate cancer often goes unsuspected, which is why it's important every man over 50 should have regular tests.

Do you know if your dad had a PSA (prostate) test when he had the other tests done?  I think it's quite likely the doctor would have included it, but of course I can't be sure.  On the assumption that he had the test and that it was normal for his age, then we can almost certainly rule out prostate cancer for his symptoms.  However, since no test is perfect, it's still possible to have a normal reading in the very early stages of prostate cancer - but early prostate cancer wouldn't produce the symptoms of tiredness.

I think if would be worth asking your dad if he had a PSA blood test.  If he can't remember, then he could contact the receptionist of his doctor's practice, and ask whether the test was done and what was the result.  If he didn't have the test then he should arrange to have one!  Prostate cancer is highly curable if it's caught early.

  • Apologies, my dad has been diagnosed with prostate cancer last week, but has had other blood test done regarding feeling weak all the time.

Nothing has showed up on the bloods and was wondering if it could be connected to the cancer.
If the cancer could be draining his energy?

    regards

    jackie

  • Sorry, I misunderstood.

I'm also sorry to hear of your dad's diagnosis.  I think it's unlikely to be causing the tiredness - but then I'm not a doctor so I could be wrong.

Since it's a recent diagnosis, he's probably got more tests and scans before they can assess its stage.  Once you know that, the treatment options will open up and you'll know what needs to be done.  I know it's worrying but there's a lot that can be done.

    All the best
