Year of pain - now diagnosed with DCIS

Hello

I don't know if anyone has had this happen to them.

November 2018 was referred to breast clinic as painful breast and felt 3 lumps in right breast.

Had mamagram and ulterscan and after tests came back was reassured as nothing showed on the mamagram and ultrascan showed it was just cysts then was told as painful was a good sign.. I came out delighted.

But the pain never subsided and by a year on the lumps had felt bigger so back to the doctors which then back to clinic. Was again said it's painful for yiu so that's good as if cancer its painless. I said maybe cysts need to tl drained ect so I was sent for another mamagram.. Was told it was clear again but wanted to do a ultrascan. I was so tender.. Then the doctor was saying ducts look swollen and abnormal also saying abnormal activity within the boob. Had to have a biopsy.

I was then very worried but as clinic day was on Christmas day then boxing day I had to wait longer for my results. My mamagram never showed up anything just like the last one.

Went back on the 8th Jan and was told I had DCIS but reassured me it was very small.

Then had to have another biopsy on other breast but after a week wait was told it wasn't cancer.

I was sent for an MRI and results said my DCIS was 6 cm by 1.3 cm so was larger than expected. I had lypm nodes removed now.

This process this time started on the 22nd December and still don't know whats really happening.

I have to travel to another hospital to have my mastectomy on right boob and reconstruction as my hospital don't do plastic surgery.. but it won't be I was told till April or May.. Just seems to be forever

Has anyone had any experience on the above.

Kind regards

Annie

  • Hello Annie and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about everything that you've been dealing with over the past year. It sounds as if it's been a difficult few months since you were referred for the second time and I can understand why you're feeling anxious about the wait for your surgery.

We've a number of ladies here on the forum who have had different experiences with breast cancer. I know that [@Irene70]‍ was diagnosed with DCIS a few years back and hopefully she, and some of the others, will be along to say Hello! and share their words of support and advice with you soon.

If you'd like to speak to one of our team of nurses about your situation you're welcome to call them. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Annie and let us know how you're getting on.

    Best wishes,

  • Oh Annie it seems you really have been through the mill. I was diagnosed with DCIS in November 2018 as well. Thankfully did not need mastectomy. I had a lumpectomy followed by 15 sessions of radiotherapy.

What is important to remember with DCIS is that it's totally contained in the milk duct, is non invasive. is not life threatening and is totally treatable.

Treatment always seems like forever but time will soon pass. I'm now on a patient led follow up programme which means that they don't contact me but they're just on the end of the phone if I have the slightest concern about anything.

I also have the reassurance of annual mammograms for 5 years.

Keep yourself busy to take your mind off things and before you know it it will all be over.

I wish you all the luck in the world with your treatment. Please let us know how you get on

    Irene xx

  • Dear Irene70

Thank you for your reply.. I am waiting on my results from the lyphm nodes to see if its invasive or not as each time i see the surgeon other checks need to be done as lump was small at first I was told but now alot bigger.. Its just the wait and the unknown to the true outcome. Mamagrams all three have never shown DCIS so for me it was just after a year saying I had cysts I couldn't stand the pain so went back and again mamagram should nothing only the ultrascan hight lighten a problem..

I feel it very helpful to hear of others going through this and very much appreciated your reply

  • Hi

I was told when I had my diaganosis 5 weeks ago that the pain I was experiencing in my left breast was nothing to do with DCIS. Last week I had surgery and go tomorrow for the results of the biopsy.

I am quite stressed as I suffered pain for 18 months before diagnosis and now it seems that pain is one of the symptoms.

Can anyone reassure me? I have read Irene's comments with interest.

  • Hello Liz,

First time I have ever looked on this site and thought I could maybe add something, I had Paget's and a DCIS last year in my left breast, no pain prior to biopsy apart from an ulcerated nipple which was removed last year along with the DCIS. Had 5 sessions Radiotherapy finished October last year, and boob was VERY sore and swollen for some time after.

Had a ' routine' mammogram and ultrasound in July and they found a dark spot, did a triple biopsy and now I have to have a mastectomy as it turned out to be another DCIS.

Reason I'm posting here is that yesterday and today my boob has been very hot, sore and tender, and painful. Been getting waves of nausea also. Biopsy was 6 weeks ago and haven't had the surgery yet so mystified as to why my breast is suddenly so painful.

My surgeon Alex ( God Bless her she gave me her mobile number ) has just replied to my text and is saying the pain is unlikely to be linked to my diagnosis.

I have to say I just sent one back disagreeing with her!!!

Anyone else getting pain with a DCIS BEFORE they've had surgery??

  • Hi Susie

    Thanks for the reply.

I had my DCIS surgery  June 2021 and a further biopsy on left lymph nodes. I had the next mammogram in March this year and everything was clear. I am so sorry to hear that you have to have further extreme surgery.

The pain in my breast lasted for a whole year after surgery and it is still tender if I knock it. I was advised to use kin moisturiser every day to keep the skin soft. However, I had no pain prior to surgery and if you have unexplained pain I suggest you get that checked out too.

  • My diagnosis was due to concerns with severe breast pain which I’ve had for over 2 years and a previous mammogram showed nothing. Now due for a lumpectomy and though the nurses say pain is common and can be psychosomatic it’s really concerning that it wakes me up at night and constantly needing pain relief and not reading much to say this is normal! Op is in 10 days a hope there will be less pain afterwards.
