Prostate Cancer Gleason 9

Hi all,

My uncle has been diagnosed with high risk, locally advanced prostate cancer. His Gleason score is 9, it is T3b, and his PSA is currently 132.
In terms of spread, he is M1a - it has spread to lymph nodes and nerves but not to bones or organs. Doctors have recommended chemotherapy and he is currently on hormone therapy. He is 51 years old.
I just feel very scared and I would really appreciate speaking to someone who has had prostate cancer, especially of a similar score/category. I want to understand how "bad" this is, and if I should be hopeful or not. While I am probably looking for reassurance, I also would like to know the reality of what to expect.
So many questions run through my mind...does he only have five years, is this terminal, can be ever be in remission?

I would really appreciate the stories of people who have been through this.

thank you so much

  • Thank you so much Billy. I know this is all going to be a long process but I think celebrating the small wins makes a difference.
There was a man on the documentary who was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer back in 2015 and has written a lot about the lifestyle changes he's made. In case you want to read about that also :) thecancerjourneyman.co.uk/.../

I'm glad you're doing ok. Keep me updated also if you like :) am here for you.

thank you for your kind words xx

  • Hi Billy, I hope you don't mind me reaching out again. First of all, how have you been and how is your treatment going?
My uncle has started to deteriorate over the last couple of months. It's spread to his lymph nodes and he's had to have a catheter and has terrible swelling in his legs (for which he is now getting radiotherapy). He should hopefully start chemo for a second time in two weeks. Hes been in a lot of pain and can't sit as the cancer has spread to his back passage. it's been very difficult to see him suddenly display such physical symptoms.
I wanted to ask you please (if you don't mind sharing)  as I know you have it in your lymph nodes - have you ever been through something similar (the swelling and the pain)? I'm just so worried seeing him struggle to walk and his legs and ankles swollen. It's the first time we've seen him really show some physical effect from his disease.
It seems like other people have metastatic cancer but seem able to live very normal lives with just hormone therapy. It feels like his cancer is particularly aggressive...it's been hard seeing him like this.
anyway, I hope you and your wife are both doing well. Thank you for reading this.

  • Morning qwerty.  ,.   So sorry about your uncles pains And swelling . I've not had any bad pains or swelling so im afraid I won't be much help with that sorry again

i do have some pains but can manage with painkiller . almost two years ago my PSA went up to 68 in three months and they put me on stronger hormone therapy (Enzalutamide tablets),its what men have for sex change . luckily it worked but really knocked me for 6 and BP dropped low so no energy and tired all the time .dose is now dropped so im feeling alot better , apart from treatment has made my teeth bad had top lot out.

i really hope your uncle soon gets chemotherapy and it does a good job, and he doesn't have many side effects .

But thinking of him and wishing him good luck  .

Been in lately as cold out be glad when warmer weather, Brenda is as good as can be likes to go out back and lay in gazebo with radio and watch birds feeding  .

Thinking of you hope you are keeping well .

    Billy X

  • Thank you for your reply Billy. It's so nice to hear that you're doing well and so is Brenda. Thank you for being willing to share and your kind words. I'll be praying for you and my Uncle. Thank you x
