What's the point of screening if it doesn't work?

This will probably turn into a rant, so sorry in advance.  My lovely 74 year old step dad has benn A) religiously sending off bowel screening samples for the past 10 years, whenever asked to, on 2 yearly repeat and B) going back and fore to the doctors with loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea and back pain.  Told it was "the aches and pains of old age".  When he was in absolute agony and rang for yet another appointment, was told if it wasn't an emergency, he would have to wait 3 weeks. As he's of the old school and felt he could manage the pain, he accepted that load of old tosh and spent 3 weeks really fighting the pain, and still volunteering twice a week with the RVS.  Finally went to see a GP he hasn't seen before who did a rectal exam and said straightwaway he thought it was cancer.  2 days later he's in the hospital and basic tests are done - yes, it's cancer!  Back in next week for endoscopy, scans etc., which seems to me like that means it's probably not early stage.  I'm SO ANGRY!!  What's the point in doing the damn screening if it doesn't work?!  I'm overdue to send mine off for the first time, and just think, what's the point because if I'm going to get ashock like that a couple of year's down the line when I think everything is ok, think I'll save the NHS the bother.

  • Hi RLM,

It sounds like you're feeling angry at the moment.  That's totally understandable and normal when a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. When my wife was diagnosed a few months ago I found my emotions manifesting in all sorts of different ways.  Sometimes I felt angry at the doctors because they gave us the news that she had cancer, I started to associate the cancer with them and on a subconscious level felt like it was their fault when of course rationally I knew they were trying so hard to treat her! When she had complications from her operation and was very poorly, I felt angry at them for putting her in this position, but again, I knew that really, they were doing everything in their power to make her better.

I can understand your frustration that this hasn't been picked up through the screening and that the doctor didn't pick up the symptoms sooner.  The truth is this could be for so many different reasons, cancer isn't just one disease, but around 200 different ones and whilst screening won't necessarily find everything, it does find some of the more common cancers for many people.  The symptoms of cancer are often very subtle and most often, there are no symptoms at all.  Symptoms can mimic those of many other conditions.  Please do continue to go to the screening, whilst it's mildly unpleasant and doesn't find everything, it also saves so many lives every year.

To reassure you, it is normal procedure for your Dad to be sent for scans and tests.  The doctors do this so they can get a better understanding of the extent and location of the disease and pull together a treatment plan.

In the early diagnosis stages, it can feel like there is a lot of waiting around for tests, results and appointments, but this does start to get easier over time as you get more information about next steps.  Keep posting here and make sure you look after yourself so that you can look after your Dad.

  • This happened with my dad.

He paid and went private to find out he had stage 4 bowel cancer. Then to top it off on 2 home visit from the doctor and Macmillan nurse , when he was back from hospital he had septsis and they missed it ! Dispite the concerns we raised.

We ignored them in the end. Took him to hospital and the day after He ended up in intensive care and also had kidney dialysis !

But on the positive he's a live and kicking still X
