This will probably turn into a rant, so sorry in advance. My lovely 74 year old step dad has benn A) religiously sending off bowel screening samples for the past 10 years, whenever asked to, on 2 yearly repeat and B) going back and fore to the doctors with loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea and back pain. Told it was "the aches and pains of old age". When he was in absolute agony and rang for yet another appointment, was told if it wasn't an emergency, he would have to wait 3 weeks. As he's of the old school and felt he could manage the pain, he accepted that load of old tosh and spent 3 weeks really fighting the pain, and still volunteering twice a week with the RVS. Finally went to see a GP he hasn't seen before who did a rectal exam and said straightwaway he thought it was cancer. 2 days later he's in the hospital and basic tests are done - yes, it's cancer! Back in next week for endoscopy, scans etc., which seems to me like that means it's probably not early stage. I'm SO ANGRY!! What's the point in doing the damn screening if it doesn't work?! I'm overdue to send mine off for the first time, and just think, what's the point because if I'm going to get ashock like that a couple of year's down the line when I think everything is ok, think I'll save the NHS the bother.
