Advice needed for lack of communication from specialists

Hi, I’m in need of some advice

My mother was admitted to hospital 7 weeks ago with acute pains in her leg which was diagnosed as secondary cancer in the bone in her femur and shin - the primary cancer is yet to be identified.

whilst in hospital she broke her hip (another story) and the surgery and management for this has taken priority.

my frustration is that no one is talking to either my father or myself about what the primary cancer is and what the prognosis is or what the plan of action is in terms of treatment.

we have asked for updates etc, but keep being told about the progress and healing of the leg, but appear to be avoiding the elephant in the room.

we haven’t seen or spoken to an oncologist since the initial diagnosis - we feel like we’re being avoided.

who should we be asking to speak to, and are we being unreasonable wanting answers, as my mother is now entering her 8th week in hospital?

  • So sorry to hear about what is happening with your mum.  It is possible they haven't been able to do the required scans to identify the primary tumour yet, but they will definitely want to do this as this will determine her treatment plan.

I can totally understand that with 8 weeks having passed you would expect to hear something and obviously curiosity and part of getting the whole picture is knowing where the primary tumour is.  That said, what I would say is that as long as her current symptoms are being dealt with then it is really a bit inconsequential what the primary cancer is as they can't start treating it yet.  Still frustrating to not know though.

If you really feel you aren't being told as much as you should be then ask one of the staff for the details of the Patient Liaison Officer and write to, or email, them explaining your concerns.

Fingers crossed you get some answers soon.
