Tonsil cancer radiotherapy

Hello Team

So sorry you’ve all had your struggles. I was about to celebrate twenty years clear of breast cancer when I was diagnosed.....

I've just had my cancerous tonsil removed but whilst looks contained there is not room for 5mm clearance margin and it was at the top of my tonsil. No results yet but scans for spread looked clear at time of surgery although unreported.

I have two two teenage children in the midst of exams  and have not told them yet. Am waiting for more information but they are my greatest concern.

I also wondered how small the radiotherapy field can be or is or is it a blanket dose to entire left side of neck even if nodes not involved? Is chemo likely?

thank you

  • So that's it last chemo was Wed's and last radio was Friday.  They said this week would be the worst but I didnt realise it would hit him so hard   He's done so well up to now ironic that he is this bad now the treatment has stopped.  Just wondered how others coped during this week.  He can barely get out of bed !

Hope everyone is doing well.  Dispersable Asprin are now trending at the Oncology dept - everyone's on them !

  • Hi Jane oh yes weeks after treatment are deffo challenging. What yiu have to remember his body is like an oil filled radiator filled with chemotherapy n radiotherapy and it has to slowly leech out .Vicious circle as water mfood and of all things gentle exercise justbthe 3 things we dint want to do. I had a spreadsheet tried to drink 2 or 3 litres of water and 2500 caloiries every day in first year up to 6 ensures a day  plus  I likened it to being behind the dark side of the moon then waiting to re enter back to Earth. Yes disposable aspirin is good .i really do know where yiu are coming from as September 2018 I was in same position but pure grit and determination git me on s plane the  25 th if october .if yiu want  read or re read  my blog  .www.radioactiveraz.wordpress.com.Theres also a excellent article online by Dr P Harvey After treatment -what happens next it puts everything into context.

I am now 18 month post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer and living my life.

Good luck ask anything u want to know

    Hazel xx

  •

Thanks so much - just knowing others have been there and come through is really helpful xx

  • Hi Jane no problem always pleased to help. Just hang in there

    H xx

  • Hi Jane , good news treatment over , but as Hazel said this is where it starts really , I didn't really develop hardly any side effects apart from tiredness while having treatment  , my side effects all seemed to hit me at once ,just after treatment finished ,and believe me they are not easy , but there is light at the end of the tunnel , sometimes I used to think they would never ever end.  Or as one would ease off another would start.  I finished my treatments middle August last year , so Hazel is a year ahead of me , she has been brilliant to me , I messsge her even now asking questions regarding side effects , it won't be easy but does get better over time , I still can't eat , but everyone is different   Please take a look at Hazel's blog you will find it so helpful ,

hope all goes well , and we are always here to chat or rant to lol

    Maria xx

  • Thanks Maria - he seems to be the same.  Hopefully he will have a bit more energy soon.  Thanks for all the advice.  Will keep the fluids and his spririts up xx

  • Thanks that was really helpfull  All the treatments seem very similar wherever we are and most of the side effects too.  Mucus has really started to kick in for him - like you said where does is all come from??I'm 'm glad thats stopped for you now and you are beginning to eat some more   Frey Bentos pie sounds gorgeous!!

I'd just be glad when he gets some energy back - trying to balance encouragment without nagging too much is hard!

The blogs are really  helpful thank you

  • Hi Herbie, welcome to our small club, so sorry to hear the mucus, is starting to kick in, I never thought I would ever get past that stage, but you will stay strong there were times I really wanted to die, my throat was so sore, now I'm starting to eat and the most pleasurable part is having my tast buds return I never thought I would be able to taste proper food, but stay strong, it is going to get harder but you will get through it,

    stay strong  Del x

  • Eventfull weekend  Husband got a temperature on thursday. Refused to go in until he realised it wasnt getting any better so ended up going in on Friday.  Bit scary as had to go through A &E but got through pretty quickly seems there is a protocol for post chemo patients.

Put on  IV antibiotics as he was neutropinic.  All very scary bu he recovered quickly - seems he picked up a throat infection - not sure where from but with 2 kids in the house all the antibac in the world won't keep all the germs away. That was a valentines day to forget!!  Eventually got home yesterday and has  a lot more energy.

Only problem now is that whenever he does the ensure through the pump 1.5 bottles and 60ml water flush he gets ridiculously tired - anyone else had that problem
