Tonsil cancer radiotherapy

Hello Team

So sorry you’ve all had your struggles. I was about to celebrate twenty years clear of breast cancer when I was diagnosed.....

I've just had my cancerous tonsil removed but whilst looks contained there is not room for 5mm clearance margin and it was at the top of my tonsil. No results yet but scans for spread looked clear at time of surgery although unreported.

I have two two teenage children in the midst of exams  and have not told them yet. Am waiting for more information but they are my greatest concern.

I also wondered how small the radiotherapy field can be or is or is it a blanket dose to entire left side of neck even if nodes not involved? Is chemo likely?

thank you

  • Thanks that was really helpfull  All the treatments seem very similar wherever we are and most of the side effects too.  Mucus has really started to kick in for him - like you said where does is all come from??I'm 'm glad thats stopped for you now and you are beginning to eat some more   Frey Bentos pie sounds gorgeous!!

I'd just be glad when he gets some energy back - trying to balance encouragment without nagging too much is hard!

The blogs are really  helpful thank you

  • Hi Herbie, welcome to our small club, so sorry to hear the mucus, is starting to kick in, I never thought I would ever get past that stage, but you will stay strong there were times I really wanted to die, my throat was so sore, now I'm starting to eat and the most pleasurable part is having my tast buds return I never thought I would be able to taste proper food, but stay strong, it is going to get harder but you will get through it,

    stay strong  Del x

  • Eventfull weekend  Husband got a temperature on thursday. Refused to go in until he realised it wasnt getting any better so ended up going in on Friday.  Bit scary as had to go through A &E but got through pretty quickly seems there is a protocol for post chemo patients.

Put on  IV antibiotics as he was neutropinic.  All very scary bu he recovered quickly - seems he picked up a throat infection - not sure where from but with 2 kids in the house all the antibac in the world won't keep all the germs away. That was a valentines day to forget!!  Eventually got home yesterday and has  a lot more energy.

Only problem now is that whenever he does the ensure through the pump 1.5 bottles and 60ml water flush he gets ridiculously tired - anyone else had that problem

  • Hi deffo an valentines tomfotgwt,Glad he is home and ok .Re the feeding I wasn’t peg fed but did have a nasal feeding tube and yes insoon be ame tired and fully. Our tummy’s quickly shrink and I found 300 mil made me full and subsequently tired .My tube wasntbthe sort that I could feed at night with so itbwas a full day trying to sleep feed hospital ,I rarely got the full amount if feed in as I was tired and tunmmy full I used to have to stand up towards end of feed tontry and get more stuff in.

hooe  this  makes sense , even now 18 month on I don’t eat as much as I used to , plus in the weeks after treatment i found  it easier to eat 6 smaller meals rather than the traditional 3 meals a day .

  • Hiya, so sorry to hear about herbie,s infection in the throat, glad to here he,s over it now, I was on a litre of feed and 60mls of flush 15 times a day, and I was the same with the morphine all I did was sleep, I'm at the stage now I still have my peg in, but I'm not using it at all, I'm now eating 3 times a day.

my thoughts are with you, try to keep well

  • Hi glad he on the mend now bless him , I had peg but only used mine manually never used the pump xxx

  • Thanks I think we will split them up a bit more and maybe take a bit more time with eacj one.  He doesn't like doing it so tries to get it done asap but 1.5 bottles in 10 minutes plus flushing is probably a bit too qucik

Thanks for all your support as always - onwards and upwards!!

  • Hi , yea maybe just go at a pace that suits him , took me a while to see how much to have , and how long , it's natural to want it over quick , but can make u feel bit sickly , even now if I drink a fresubin energy drink too fast it makes me feel sick and dizzy , everyone's is different so go with whst feels right , and exactly onwards and upwards you might not think that will happen , slowly but surly it will. Xxxxxx
