Newly diagnosed breast cancer but no symptoms

My mum has been diagnosed with breast cancer, she is in complete shock. There was no pain & she felt ok  one morning she woke up with sore arm and unable to lift it up. There was a swelling in armpit only & she though she had hurt herself

she went to Gp two days later & was told she had an infection, the gp gave her a prescription to ease swelling.. the swelling has disappeared before her appointment a the breast clinic.

at the breast clinic she had a mammogram, ultrasound & two biopsys.we were told that the mammogram & ultra sound were clear. The core boispy wasn't back at that time so they said they didn't know why the gland lympnode was swollen.

mum was called back two weeks later for test results and they told us that there had been cancer cells found in her lympnodes in her armpit. That day they took further mammograms & ultra sounds & 6 biopsy. Some of the biopsy came back showing that they had found two tumours in her right breast.

The specialist told us that he wanted to check for spreading, now we are awaiting the other biopsys, blood tests & cat scan. I am terrified that the cancer may have spread elsewhere, is this standard procedure?

We need to return to the specialist this week for all test results. He has already said that my mum should have her right breast & lympnodes removed, what stage cancer do you think I'm describing, we are out of our minds with worry

any help & advise would be appreciated

  • Hi

I too had no symptoms and my bc was picked up through screening. It is a horrible shock for you and your mum and it does sound like the team your mum is under is being very thorough. The breast care pathway is quite a speedy pathway but can vary a little area to area. Don't read anything into timeframes. Unfortunately there is always waiting to be done....waiting for tests, waiting for surgery, waiting for results.

With regards to staging this would be dependent on the size of the tumours, how many lymph nodes are involved and if it has gone beyond the nodes. This is the TNM staging system. However they wont give a final staging until after all the test and surgery.

When your mum was at the hospital they should have allocated her a breast care nurse. If your mum wants to know more info they would be able to tell her more but this would be based on the tests she has had now. I've had a lovely nurse that I could call if I wanted to check things out.

Breast cancer survival has improved significantly in recent years. There are lots of us bc ladies on here who may pop along at some point. Some who are currently undergoing treatment like me but also others who finished treatment a number of years ago.

Take care and I hope your mum and yourself are able to get some clearer information soon x
