Nodule found in left lung, now waiting for date of surgery.

Hi, my name is Peter and after PET scan a nodule was found in my lower left lung, when shown the scan the nodule was lit up like a Christmas tree......I was informed that the radiated glucose that was injected sticks to the cancer cells and shows up on the PET scan.

Since the scan I have had a ECG, Heart & Lung function test and another type of scan sorry forgot the name but it is the same they use on pregnant women. I have also seen the Anaesthetist and now waiting to see the Surgeon, I was told two weeks ago that surgery would be in approx four weeks.

From original diagnosis it has taken two weeks to get this far and can thank the NHS for there prompt diagnosis and treatment so far.

If anyone has had a similar diagnosis information on the surgery would be appreciated ie where would the incision be  & where does the incision start and end, how long is the stay in Hospital, has anyone had their own blood taken pre opp in case it is needed.

I think the waiting is the worst part to see after the opp if it has spread to the Lymph glands etc, perhaps even the Lucie the moderator or nurse could help with my questions.

All the best everyone and thank you for taking the time to read this and try and stay positive as great advances have been made in the treatment of Cancer, and remember it is good to talk to family & friends as they also are going through this with you and are sometimes afraid to talk about the subject in fear of upsetting you.

  • Hello Peter and a very warm welcome to Cancer Chat!

I am sorry to hear you have been recently diagnosed. I imagine you have so many questions racing through your head and feel that there isn't much time left for you to find answers before the surgery. It is great though that you have been looked after so well by the NHS and that they have moved so fast.

I have no medical expertise myself but I thought I would do a little search for you on lung surgery. This page from our website contains very useful information on the subject and will guide you through the different steps from preparing for the operation, going into hospital and what to expect after surgery. If you have any question about anything or just want to find out more about any aspect of the diagnosis or surgery, our cancer nurses are only a free phone call away. You can ring them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and I promise they are really friendly and are very good at explaining things clearly.

As nothing replaces hearing from personal experiences, I also hope someone who has recently had this particular surgery will be along soon to share their story with you.

Best of luck with the operation and we will be keeping everything crossed that you make a speedy recovery. Do come back here at any time to update us on how the surgery has been. I hope you don't have to wait too long. We'll be thinking of you.

  • Hi Pete, hope your surgery goes well

i too have been on a rollercoster the last two weeks, I have a shadow on my lung pressing on my pulmonary artery which showed up on a CT scan. Yesterday I went for a PET scan and see the consultant tomorrow for results

  • Hi Joyce, I hope you have good news when you see the consultant.......not knowing is the worst part but I have found talking helps and gives family members an active part in helping you through it.

Treating pulminary / lung problems have a wide variety of treatrments available with good results compared to only a few years ago, I will be thinking of you as you go for your results later today.

    Best wishes

    Peter
