Tongue biopsy and tonsillectomy

It's been a week now since my tongue biopsy and tonsillectomy and I was wonderering how long it's gonna be before I can eat? Iv'e tried what the docs said but it was impossible. Food just gets stuck in my throat and I can't seem to get it down without lots of water. Then any appetite I had just goes down the pan. Also, food goes up the back of my nose which is horrible and uncomfortable. Is there any end to this? Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Hello Poppy, I am one of the enquiry nurses and have been asked by our moderators to read your post,

I am sorry to learn about what has been going on, it sounds like you have been through a lot.

I am not sure if things have improved a bit since Monday, I do hope so, but if not it would be a good idea to get in touch with the hospital docs to ask if this okay in your situation. It can take a while for swelling to settle down after surgery but I am afraid I can’t tell you how long it will take for you.  If you are unable to follow the instructions you were given, I think you need to let your medical team know and ask if you should be doing something else.

This is sure to improve in time,  although most people have good and bad days on the road to recovery.

    Take care,

    Julia

  • Hi Julia.

I am still having problems swallowing and I saw the consultant today but didn't mention it because it all just goes out of my head. He said that it hadn't fully healed but didn't say anything else. I am due to see him again tomorrow at a different hospital so I will go armed with questions. He told me I will need radiotherapy and drugs (not sure what drugs) and have at least two months off work and nearing the end of my treatment, eating will probably be too painful so I will have to have a tube in my stomach to feed me. Oh what joy!  I can't believe that I haven't asked many questions as what is happening to me; I think it's because I've been dragged along with it all at high speeds and cannot catch my breath. I can't fault the NHS though as they have been so thougher with my treatment......

    Debbie xx    and thanks!
