Not coping with taking my letrozole medication after breast

omg where do I begin had a lumpectomy 13/12/16 results 2 weeks later back in 10/1/17 for second operation again 2 weeks later back for results back in 7/2/17 for mastectomy all this was fine  it was like a rollercoaster didn't have time to think about myself only how my family would cope etc then a month on I started taking letrozole and bang I have never felt so unwell is this normal? Has anyone else experienced awful side effects from this tablet?

  • Hi jmbl.

So sorry to hear about the side-effects you're suffering from the Letrozole.

After my last post I began to realise that I was becoming more and more depressed to the point where I felt absolutely nothing emotionally. I didn't even want to go to my grandsons's 7th birthday party, which was unthinkable for me.

I spoke to a breast care nurse, who told me to stop the Letorzole for 3 weeks and see if it made any difference. Within 10 days I was feeling so much more like my old self and the other symptoms were fading away too.

I saw my breast surgeon yesterday and am now on Tamoxifen, which I tollerated well the last time I had breast cancer 23 years ago. I will take it for 10 years (less the few months on Letrozole).

He was very emphatic that I should not have to suffer serious side-effects and that quality of life is extremely important for BC survivors.

There are other medications available for people like us who struggle on Letrozole.

It might be worth having a discussion with somebody in your medical support team to see if they can offer you an alternative that makes life more bearable for you.

I do hope you get something sorted out and don't have to continue living as you are.

Let me know how you get on. xx

  • Hi Grandmatina

Thanks for replying I didn't realise I had side effects till I realised something was wrong! Thank goodness I found this chat conversation I thought I was going mad. I was told I can come off Letrozole as I had been of it for five years last year but said I would continue not realising the way I was feeling was because of Letrozole. So I have stopped fingers crossed that like you I will feel a lot better in a few weeks. Like you I didn't want to see my grandchildren, I felt just to tired. I will keep you posted.

Good luck yourself and thank you xx

  • Hello again.

It's so good to share this roller coaster journey with someone who understands what we're going through!

Hope you feel better really soon.

    xx

  • Hi [@grandmatina]‍

I am so pleased i found this chat line and read your side effects and everyone elses.  Its made me realise theres not only me suffering, and very badly at times with bad pains in my arms, deep inside and a feeling of burning in my bones etc. I have been on Letrozole from March 2020 and gradually the pains have got worse. I used to be very fit and strong especially for my age, but now can't lift my arms in different positions, hurts to brush my hair, used to be able to get my arms up my back to my neck but now can't do any of that at all.  Please can anyone help if theres an alternate to Letrozole. with no horrible side effects.

I hope you soon feel better GrandMatina

  • I am sorry i forgot the date - 17th July 2021 post from HeaRich replying to GrandMatina

  • Hi just read your post . I am very worried I was told I have 2 cancers different ones in both boobs and need both taken off. The tablet they will give me for life will be latrozole. I have poli arthritis  that's all joints. My knees are relaxed and both hips. 17 and 16 years ago and need replacing again. My shoulders toes ankles wrists very bad. Is it worth going through this op on breasts I carnt walk without help have a scooter. I am 78 in sep and on my own since my hubby died in 2020. More pain and sleepless night I don't need. The exercises will be hard to do but not only that I have angina and 3 injections a day insulin. Could be better to leave thing alone and plod on. I hope you are managing to carry on ,people say you will Cope but I have had 7 years already coping. Thinking about you stay save xxx Florance25 big hug

  • The tablets are for the cancer not coming back so if you have a lot of pain now it won't notice I stopped taking my tablets for about a month now because I'm in so much pain but the pain is still there so it's got to be arthritis so I've am going to start taking them again  and start taking the painkillers and injections in my knees for the pain ..the pain in my fingers are terrible today  good luck on what you are going to do all the best in your fight

  • I am 74 and have just had a lumpectomy and 5 days of radiotherapy. Reading about letrozole and tamoxifen does not enthral me.

I have been given letrozole and take it every other day. I do however feel it will do no good since I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and  severe osteoarthritis especially in my neck. Treatment for these 3 things are ongoing so letrozole can only make it worse. They can give you meds for the effects but why add other drugs? Years ago there were only lumpectomy and radiotherapy and women survived 30 years plus. I am looking at eating the right foods to reduce the relevant hormones. There must be a better life for the next 5 years than letrozole life.  Come on researchers look at what we are saying and respond positively.

  • Im six months in and finding myself with hair loss, joint pain, headaches and sickness/diarrhoea
