Not coping with taking my letrozole medication after breast

omg where do I begin had a lumpectomy 13/12/16 results 2 weeks later back in 10/1/17 for second operation again 2 weeks later back for results back in 7/2/17 for mastectomy all this was fine  it was like a rollercoaster didn't have time to think about myself only how my family would cope etc then a month on I started taking letrozole and bang I have never felt so unwell is this normal? Has anyone else experienced awful side effects from this tablet?

  • Yes yes yes

My shoulders neck  are the worst...but all my joints ache so bad....was told  to give them 6 month before I could think about changing them .by my breast nurse. I feel about 70....I'm struggling with the stiffness and the pain.....this started a couple  weeks after started them

    Some  days just cry

  • Honestly I was the same but my boss bout me Arica Oil to try - I was very sceptical but it worked a treat! Rub it on the areas that ache twice a day

  • I'm in the same situation I had a full mastectomy with immediate reconstruction 18 months ago didn't need any treatment as it was very early stages had to have my nipple removed the oestrogen from the menopause caused it the early cancer cells invaded to the milk ducts glands something like that anyway I was fine taking letrozole until 4 day's ago hot flushes palpitations anxiety feeling weak I'm thinking about seeing the doctor it's getting me anxious about the next 3 1/2 years I don't think I could handle this everyday/night x

  • Definitely don't wait ask them if there are any other options - if you have a Macmillan nurse ask them they will support you - life is too short to be feeling pants all the time good luck snd remember to make sure they listen to you ! X

  • Thank you so much for replying I'll make an appointment to discuss it with my doctor very much appreciated xx

  • Hi Eggy

Like you I was coping really well with my cancer, I had a mastectomy in July and was more worried about my husband than myself. It was detected early and was a stage 2 and eostrogen receptive, the oncologist said that he had removed the whole tumour and there was no sign of any in the lymph glands. My Onco DX score was 6 out of 100 so he decided I didn't need chemotherapy just a short intense course of radiotherapy which I had. I was put on Letrozole whilst waiting for my op which was postponed because of Covid-19, it didn't suit me and I was swapped to Exemastane, however that was as bad, now the oncologist wants me to try Tamoxifen and Ibandronic Acid. I said I would rather not take anything but he asked me to research it and reconsider NO WAY am I taking Tamoxifen the list of side effects it may cause are horrendous including thinning bones and cancer of the uterus. The Ibandronic Acid is to help with thinning bones but I can't see why I need to take if if I don't take Tamoxifen which causes bone thinning.

The more I research into what effect these meds have on other women the more I can understand why so many refuse to take them, apparently it is as high as 6 out of 7. I asked what % of benefit these things have and the oncologist told me without them my chance of recurring cancer is 7%. I have decided to manage without the eostrogen blockers and take my chances, I can't face years of feeling ill, I am a chronic depressive and have been since1972 and all these drugs cause depression. Why anyone would prescribe medication that is going to make you feel worse I really can't understand.

Do your own research, ask about percentages and decide for yourself, only you know how you really feel and what is acceptable.

    Good luck.

  • You are very welcome

one thing I would say is that we are all different - I don't tend to read all the side effects I tend to go with the flow and see how it goes - what might not work for someone else could be fine for you x

  • Hi, I am suprised that you are on Letrozole as you are no where near the menopause,

im 70 and was put on Tamoxifen after having BC last year, I was then changed to Letrozole as I am post menopausal. Maybe worth mentioning to your doctor.

I have similar symptoms as you and hate the thought of another four years on it, feel I've aged ten years.

  • Hey Lizzybee

i was put into chemically induced menopause about 16 months ago because tomoxifen was no longer working for me .  I got on very well with letrozole for about a year, I was even able to continue with my running and horse riding then pot of nowhere I began to ache all over and got chronic fatigue - my Macmillan nurse and the oncologist were really good and gave me some other options.

  • Hi , oh that makes sense , they do know what they are doing , that's good ! I think I need to ask for maybe an alternative one , as I was okay for a year and now, aches and pains , terrible night sweats . Hope all goes well for you x
