Is Chemotherapy Worth It

I have been newly diagnosed with breast cancer.  Suggested treatment is 16 weeks chemotherapy and the 6 weeks radiotherapy and the tamoxifen for 5 years.

After all this there is no guarantee that the treatment will be successful or that the cancer won't spread as a result of treatment.

Considering the side effects of treatment and quality of life, is it not better for me to accept what is and and live the best of my life and let it take it's course.

Looking for voices of reason please. Thank you.

  • Hi Tam

It is a very emotional time when you have just been diagnosed with cancer during which time it is easy to make irrational decisions. Untreated breast cancer has a poor outcome in terms of quality of life and life expectancy. There are no guarantees but with modern treatments you have a very high chance of long term remission or even complete cure. As a betting man the odds are so good in your favour it is a bet you should not miss out on. Your investment is a few weeks of treatment for potentially decades of life. Take your time to make your decision with the knowlege that you can discontinue your treatment if it really proves too much.

  • Hi Hibiscus Tam,  sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  As you have just been diagnosed you are probably in shock and scared right now, which is normal.  Cancer is a scary word.  But like Ed says your chances of beating this are highly in your favor.  The side effects sound scary but you might not get all the side effects and if you do get some, there are tablets to counter act them.  A few months versus many years of a good quality of life sounds reasonable to me.  I went through this in 2013 , lumpectomy, chemo, radiotherapy and tamoxifen etc.  It is tough but it is worth it.  Life is not guaranteed but this is worth taking a chance on the treatment.  Good luck with your decision.  I am on here if you want to chat.  Big hugs.

  • Hi Lee

    Thank you.

If i may ask. How long was your treatment and where you able to work or had to give up working during treatment.

My greatest fear is that the chemo will kill me. I do not respond well to pharmaceuticals. I cannot even take paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain without my body convulsing with pain. Have tried various pain meds without success. My last lumpectomy, i had no pain control. The imaging radioactive injection prior to surgery cause my body to itch without any visible rash or anything.

For pain i rely of tumeric and ginger. So I really do not know what to do.

I am under pain management team at a major hospital. But as you know the wheels turn very slowly.

    Thank you

  • HI Lee

Im glad you responed to Tam's post as you have the experience relating to this particluar cancer.

How are you anyway? I hope that your treatment is keeping you on an even keel. Weve had a week away in our beautiful English coutryside, the trees showing their Autumn colours. My back is getting a bit stiffer so making the most of being agile while I can. Walking definitely helps as you do with your dogs.
