Newly diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, with a mastectomy next week. Feeling scared. Has anyone else had this diagnosis/surgery?

Hi all

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma, a 7mm grade 1 Her2 negative breast tumor with intrammary lymph node invasion. I am assuming this is stage 2 as no one has mentioned any staging.

I am booked in for a mastectomy on 1st July, this is 3 weeks after I was given the diagnosis. It has been the most challenging time of my life. I am OK one minute then in floods of tears the next. My treating consultant is on holidays but keeps intouch with MDT and has rang me. Nurses are so helpful and have taken my calls when I need clarity on something.

Just asking if anyone has had a similar diagnosis. I am 66 and I have I think opted out of immediate reconstruction.

Thank you all in advance from a very worried and anxious member

  • Hi Corkie, thinking of you today and hope all went as well as possible. Hope you're comfortable and home soon.

  • Hi Corkie,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I replied to your post not long after you wrote it, but my reply seems to have disappeared into the ether.

I hope that all went well for you yesterday and that you're not feeling too tender at present. I had a double mastectomy 15 years ago and I wasn't a suitable candidate for reconstruction, so have remained flat since then. I manage fairly well with an assortment of prostheses for different activities. some people find it more difficult to cope with a single mastectomy post-surgery than a double. This is because they often feel more uneven/unbalanced with just one breast. If you find that you feel like this, you can still have reconstruction at a later date. The main thing is that you've got rid of the cancer to start with.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We re always here for you.

Wishing you well with your recovery,

  • Hi Corkie,  I was wondering how your operation went on Monday.  Big hugs.

  • Hi Jolamine surgery went well sentinal node plus 1-2 other nodes removed and will get the biopsy results in 2 weeks.

Yesterday was a bit all over the place as I suddenly got a very large fast swelling something they prepared me for emergency surgery but when another breast consultant came and saw it he said I would be ok using a compression dressing. Today is a better day apart ftom my low blood pressure, but I can manage it.

Glad to hear you are good 15 years later. Thank you for your honesty and support.

  • Hi Corkie,

I am sorry to hear about your sudden swelling, but glad to hear that you are feeling a little better today. I has similar problem. They aspirated fluid from my breast a few times, which gave immediate relief and the bandaging did help.

    I'm always here for you.
