Hi I am Christina: had a mastectomy 8 weeks ago and getting lymph nodes removed on Friday

Hi I would like to ask I had a mastectomy   Surgery 8 weeks ago I am going in this Friday to get my lymph nods removed from under armpit has anyone else had this

  • Hi, I had a mastectomy with diep flap reconstruction in October. I had 20 lymph nodes removed at the same time. I still do my exercises twice a day, as I want to avoid getting lymphedema. Hope all goes well with your surgery on Friday. Xx

  • Hi,  just wondering how you are getting on?  I am about to have double mastectomy with diep flap and all lymph nodes removed.  Quite scared!  X

  • Hi Marwoe,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are due to have a double mastectomy, but just wanted to assure you that it is a straightforward operation. It is quite common to combine these procedures together at the time of surgery. Have you got clothing for both day and night time which opens down the front? I found it much easier to have these, as it meant that I didn't have to raise my arms above my head to dress. It was also easier to show to doctors/nurses, than having to do a striptease!

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and 1 of pre-cancer, all within a year of each other. I had a Lumpectomy first time and a Double Mastectomy for the other bouts. I had lymph nodes removed both times. I was terrified before the surgery and surprisingly, found that the Mastectomies were much easier to cope with, than the Lumpectomy. Unfortunately, I was not a suitable candidate for reconstruction, due to other, non-cancerous related surgery. I still cope well with a number of assorted prostheses for different activities.

It sounds as if your date for surgery is fairly soon and I hope that it all goes well. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Marwoe, I am fully recovered since having my surgery, but I still do my exercises every day. I'm still waiting for my next surgery, reduction and uplift on my healthy boob. Was told in January, that surgery would be in April, but still waiting.

I'm struggling a little emotionally at the moment, as I lost my mum suddenly a couple of weeks ago, which has been difficult.

Try not to get too stressed about the surgery, just take your time with the recovery. Let ne know how you get on. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

I have just learnt that you lost your mum a few weeks ago and I have to say how sorry I am to hear this. Losing your mum leaves a big void in your life. It will take time to come to terms with your loss, but with a strong and supportive family like yours, I am sure that you'll help one another through.

My thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Marwoe,

I was thinking of you on Friday and I hope that all went well.

  • Hi Jolamine, thank you so much for your kind words, We are a very close family and her death was unexpected, so we're obviously all devastated

I have my dad staying at the moment and he is just so lost without her. We have the funeral next Monday, which will be a hard day for us all.

I hope you are keeping well at the moment. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

It is always more difficult to cope with a sudden death. Does your dad live close to you? - unfortunately, he will probably be even more lost, when he returns to his own house. I am sure that you will be glad to get the funeral out of the way, as everything is a bit of a hiatus until that is over. Monday will indeed be a hard day for all of you, but you will get through it together.

I shall be thinking of you and please remember that I am always here if you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
