Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Happy Easter to all you lovely ladies, I hope you are all feeling well at the moment.

I've just had my results from my first mammogram which was all clear, so fantastic news. Still waiting for my second surgery, which is a little disappointing, as was led to believe in January, that it would be only a 3 month wait. Now say unlikely to be during the summer.

Only 2 more phego injections to go thank goodness, but will still be having zoledronic acid infusions. The letrozole is causing me some joint pain, mainly in my knees, but I find exercise does help.

I'm due to be a nanny for the 3rd time in October, which is wonderful news. Will be my eldest daughter's first baby, after trying for quite a while. She has polycystic ovaries, so wasn't sure she'd be able to have children, so we're all delighted.

How are you all getting on? Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

I am delighted to hear that your mammogram was clear. This must be a great relief for you. I am really sorry to hear that your reconstruction is likely to be a lot longer than you first expected. I am sure that you won't be sorry to finish the Phesgo injections.

I am glad to hear that you find that exercise helps the pain in your knees - I had to have both of my knees replaced when I was taking Letrozole.

I'm sure that this is a very exciting time for all the family, now that your eldest is expecting and I hope that it all goes well for her. My daughter is in a similar position, but she still has no family and we don't expect that it'll happen now. Still, I have 2 beautiful granddaughters, so I feel blessed.

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine  so lovely to hear from you. Was you recommended anything to help with the pain, while on Letrozole. I didn't realise that taking it could cause permanent damage to the joints, that was never mentioned to me. I'm sure you get such pleasure from being a grandmother to 2 gorgeous granddaughters. You never know, it could happen with your daughter, I've always been concerned that my eldest would not be successful, but she s now 13 weeks.. Hope you are enjoying Easter and are feeling well at the moment. Xx

  • Hello!!!!

So lovely to hear from you. HOpe you all had a lovely Easter. We managed to pop over to Jersey to see my parents and brothers and their famililes who live over there so that was fun and we were SO luckly with the weather! Kids went back to school this morning so the house feels very quiet!...but also like a bomb has hit it so i'm trying to have a productive day getting everything straight again...and them i'm going to pick up my course again. About 3 months ago i started a Personal Training and Nutrition course with a speciality in menopause! I'm finding it super interesting although had a break over easter....there is a lot of biology involved, i wish i paid more attention when i was at school!!!!!!! But yeah it's good and it's giving me purpose....i have to say i felt a little lost after all my BIG treatment ended so this has given me a focus....I've also signed up to the marathon moonwalk in a few weeks!!! eeeeek!!!! So i'm trying to do a LOT of walking...it's more the issue of doing it through the night which is worrying me, i'm usually tucked up in bed by 10pm!...and it starts at 9pm! But hopefully it will be a memorable experience raising money for breast cancer!

I'm on zolodronic infusions, abemaciclib and anastrozole and the moment i seem to be ok on them all..for now anyway!  A  few bouts of nausea, hot flushes etc but otherwise ok ish....The zolodronic acid wasn't very pleasant but i hear the first one is the worst so hopefully the next one will be ok!

Congratulations Pippin on grandbaby 3 on it's way. That is incredible and your eldest must be so happy to have finally got pregnant. That's fantastic news.Sorry about the joint pain but yes exercise does help! I hope it's not too unbearable and loosens up throughout the day. Brilliant about. clear mammogram too...and hopefully you'll get the second op soon...maybe it's good for you to enjoy the warmer weather and have. lovely summer before you have to have an op and recoup.

Sending lots of love and hope everyone else is doing ok.

    xx

    • Hi Greeny80, sounds like you are doing really well. It's great that you have your course to focus on,  it sounds really interesting. Lovely that you had a trip over to Jersey to see your family  and had the bonus of great weather. Enjoy the peace and quiet now that the kids are back at school, but I'm sure it was lovely having them at home for a couple of weeks. We are off for a weekend away this week, just me and hubby. Hubby won a raffle in December 2023, for a two night stay in a four star hotel. We couldn't go last year due to all my hospital visits, but have at last got it booked in. Had a lovely lunch out with my mum and dad today. They do quite well considering they 're 88 and 90 years old. Although they are getting a bit unsteady on their feet now. Good luck with your marathon  moonwalk, I'm sure you'll do great. I once run in the London marathon many years ago, couldn't do it now lol! Please let me know how you get on. Xx
  • Hi Pippin,

I replied to your other post about Letrozole to let you know that I was advised by my surgeon to take Starflower oil capsules. Check this with your own consultant first, just to make sure. I certainly have legacies from my hormone treatments, even after 15 years, and I agree that we are not given sufficient advice about the permanent damage that can be caused by these drugs at the outset.

I fear that it's getting a little late for my daughter now, but I feel very fortunate to have the two girls, who are a great joy. I think that I am finally beginning to recover from the dose of Covid that I had at Christmas and I had an MRI for my back on Tuesday, so am now awaiting the results.

I see that you and hubby are going away for a couple of days and I hope that you enjoy the break.

  • Thank you Jolamine for your reply. I did speak to the pharmacy at the hospital about taking supplements. All they say is there is insufficient evidence about reactions with herbal remedies. Might have to ask for a telephone appointment with oncology and see what they have to say.

Such a shame about your daughter, really feel for anyone who can't have children and want them. Did she ever get referred to a fertility clinic?

Hope all goes well with the results from your mri, let me know how you get on.

Had to fill in a questionnaire from plastics yesterday, to let them know if I wanted to stay on surgery list or come off. I stated I wanted to remain on the list. It's now saying approximate time frame is 13 weeks, could be more or less than that. They told me that time frame in January, so who knows when it will be!!

Really can't wait to go away tomorrow!

  • Hi Pippin,

There is evidence that some alternative products can reduce the effectiveness of certain cancer treatments. My consultant told me to stop taking Evening Primrose Oil Capsules for this reason. It's certainly worth talking to your Oncology Team if you can. No unfortunately, my daughter never investigated it any further, as she has other health issues too.

Did they really expect you to say no to reconstruction after waiting all this time? It is so frustrating to still find yourself at the same time scale as you were in January. I sincerely hope that you get an appointment sooner than this.

We are just back from a holiday in Ireland with my son, his wife and 2 daughters. We spent a lot of the time catching up with family, but enjoyed the break. Fortunately, the weather was kind and we only had one wet day.

I hope that you have a great time when you're away.

  • Hi Jolamine, good to hear that you've just had a lovely holiday with the family in Ireland. We were in Ireland earlier in the year, unfortunately for a funeral. My in-laws were both from Ireland and hubby has about 60 cousins over there.

Sorry to hear that your daughter has other health issues to deal with, that's very sad. Life can be so hard sometimes.

It is frustrating being no further forward than I was in January. I wish they were just honest with you in the first place. Will just have to be patient and put it out of my mind for now. Will definitely speak to oncology at some point. Have a lovely weekend. Xx
