Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Hi everyone, hope you all had a lovely Christmas and would like to wish you all  a Happy New Year. It would be lovely to hear from you all and see how you are all doing.

I finished my radiotherapy on Christmas eve and all went smoothly. My tummy wound has now healed and I no longer need to go for wound checks. I finally got my ultrasound to check the lump in my armpit on the reconstructed breast side. They think it us probably fat necrosis. However, they decided to take three biopsies, just to be sure. This did come as a bit of a shock, as now have another wait for results. I have an appointment to go and see the plastic surgeon on 24th Jan, it should have been after 6 weeks, but got missed. I'm hoping he'll give me some idea when I can have breast reduction on healthy breast. I have heard people say they've had to wait quite a while for this to be done. I'm really hoping they don't make me wait too long. Look forward to hearing from you all. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

Happy New Year. I hope that you enjoyed Christmas with your family. We certainly did.

I am delighted to hear that your wound has cleared up at long last. I am also glad to hear that you have had your ultrasound and sincerely hope that your results will be clear - I am keeping my fingers crossed! I am sure that it must have come as a shock to have 3 biopsies. Did they say when your results will be back? WE are still waiting for hubby's biopsy results.

Despite your anxious wait, I am sure that you will feel more reassured to have these done in the long term. I see that you have also had an appointment through to see the plastic surgeon and hope that it won't be too long before he can fit you in for surgery.

  • Hi Jolamine, good to hear that you enjoyed a lovely Christmas with your family. I'm trying not to worry too much about results, I feel fairly confident it's nothing to worry about. They said I should hear in a coiple of weeks. I hope your hubby is doing OK while waiting for his results. How are things with you at the moment? Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

Fortunately, hubby's dementia helps him during this wait, as he doesn't seem concerned at all - I'm not sure that he even remembers having the biopsy. My tilt test didn't show up anything too untoward, so I expect that we'll have to start juggling with my medication again. I'm just waiting to see.

I hope that your results come through soon.

    Jolamine xx

  • It's good that your husband isn't experiencing the anxiety of waiting for his results, although it is very sad that he has dementia. Good to hear your tilt test didn't show any problems. Hopefully, tweaking your meds will sort out the problems. Xx
