Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Ah thanks so much Pippin! Was thinking about you all today as it has been quiet on the messages this week but hoping that means everyone is feeling ok and good?? Hope so!!

Very strange to be closing the chapter on Chemo!…but very welcome!

Hope you’re doing ok? Have you heard anything about upcoming appts?

Thanks so much for the message and for thinking of me

  • Hi Greeny80, appointments have now started coming through, I'm glad to say. I have a face to face appointments with oncologist prior to my last chemo. I then have an mri followed by an appointment with the surgeon. So a lot going on this month. Hopefully will soon know the plan moving forward. Will be thinking of you tomorrow. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

I am delighted to hear that your appointments are coming through at last. It's not long now until you too get to ring that bell!

    Thinking of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi everyone.  Sorry for the delay!  Sounds like everyone is doing amazing and progressing well through treatment and planning to ring those bells!  I opted not to ring the bell at end of chemo as I still had immunotherapy to get through, so I will ring that bell on my last immunotherapy treatment, which at the moment is 21 November.

I finally got the call today regarding radiotherapy.  I have my new patient consultation on 10th July and CT Scan and planning session on 12 July.  Might still be on track to start around 18th July or perhaps the week after, so hopefully I will be done with radiotherapy by early to mid August.

I had my dentist appointments this week and had a little filling repair and a scale and polish, so once radiotherapy is done, I'm all set to start taking the ibandronic acid tablets (really don't want to, but I'll try them and see how I get on).

Hope everyone is doing well and have made it out or are going to make it out to vote today lol.  Have a great weekend when it comes.  I'm off to Sussex this afternoon to see my Dad - it's been nearly 2 years since I last saw him.

    Carol xx

  • Thanks Jolamine, can't wait to ring that bell. Hope you are keeping well. Xx

    Hi everyone

lots of positivity which is truly fantastic

Greeny - congratulations on smashing chemo.  Well done you

Carol - pleased dentist given all clear and go ahead.  See how you get on with bone therapy. Also great news dates in place for radiotherapy - another thing to soon tick off

also how wonderful you get to see your Dad xx

Pippin - not long until your last chemo too. And great news you have appointments in place

I too have had positive outcome.  My breast surgeon is on leave ( I’m pleased about that given he refused my gene test and opted for two surgeries which in hindsight should have been mastectomy ). Anyways this means I was referred to County main hospital and saw that surgeon today.  He was brilliant.  Surgery has to take place within 6 weeks of chemo. I’m booked in for 24 th July.  He was appalled at hodge job done by previous surgeon and lack of testing since chemo

I had a mammogram today to check no further cancer in breasts - I have 2 appointments next week and pre op.  I will be having reconstruction but require expanders due to mess made during lumpectomy and re excision.  The skin has lacked blood flow since these surgeries.  Does mean many weeks of regular appointments but I feel more confident with this surgeon.
testing of my wider family has now started and I’ve been referred to embrace research project.  I’m also been put forward for pancreatic screening in due course

overall it’s all happening - still a long way to go but I’m pleased there is no delay

    xxx

  • Hi Carol, I really can't wait to be finished with the chemo part of the treatment, next week. I feel that it is finally something that can be ticked of as completed. Hopefully will know the plan moving forward, by the end of the month. Good to hear that you have your appointments booked in and will hopefully be starting your radiotherapy on the 18th of July. We went for our usual walk this morning and popped in to vote on our way home. Hope you are feeling OK and have a lovely weekend  xx

  • Meant to say, enjoy Sussex and meeting up with your Dad. It will be lovely for you to see him after 2 years. Xx

Hi NGS, can't wait to be finished with chemo, it's such a good feeling. So pleased to hear that you have now got a surgeon that you are happy with. I would think that you must now feel much more confident about your upcoming surgery. Hopefully, I will know the plans for my surgery by the end of the month. It's good that the testing has now started for your family, what is the research project that you have been referred to? Hope you have a great weekend. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

As far as cancer is concerned, I'm doing well, but scalded my tummy badly 4 weeks ago. This was with hot coffee and I am still having it dressed regularly. I was amazed at the damage this did, but it seems to be healing now thanks.
