Been told I have lung cancer despite a clear scan & x-ray

Hi my doctor told me through a physical examination that I had lung cancer I had x ray that showed nothing I had ct scan that showed nothing should I ask for biopsy to be done doctor told me to tell my family and my 16 year old son ,I told my family but not my son till I know what I'm dealing with why would he be so persistent I tell my family if he wasn't 100% sure I had cancer

  • I'm sorry you're going through this and my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer but that was after an x Ray, CT scan, biopsy and a full body scan, if it is is cancer then you should be seeing an oncologist who will give you the proper results after all these tests have been completed and a meeting has been held to discuss your treatment.  We told our family nothing until the cancer had been confirmed by the proper specialist and we also had a cancer nurse in with us.  I would personally wait until all this has been done because to talk about this with your family until you have the full facts seems wrong.  I hope you have some help in sorting this out.  Best wishes, Carol

  • No cancer can be diagnosed through physical examination. More so one that is internal.

If the scans are clear, where is he getting this diagnosis from? Even scans aren't used to give a definitive diagnosis. That's what biopsies are for.

Purely going from the information you have provided, where could they even take a biopsy from if there's nothing there? What led him to believe you have cancer? Have you had a lymph node (usually around the collarbone) out or any other strange swellings or outwardly signs?

This seems really bizarre. They can suspect you have a cancer, and some can give an educated guess before a biopsy has came back confirming such a thing, but yeah, lung cancer can share symptoms with many other more benign conditions.

I'm with Dor06 on this. I wouldn't be telling anyone you have cancer until they give you more of an explanation or even find something. Huge difference between "may have cancer" and "having cancer".

  • There is no way a doctor can diagnose lung cancer through a physical examination.

  • Sorry but I think your doctor is wrong in speaking to you like this I would get a second opinion & change your doctor how would he know until all the tests plus biopsy are done .Also what right has he to insist you tell your family about something that has yet to be diagnosed a physical examination and a Xray is not enough.

  • I went to doctors with a really severe cough for over 5 months had 2 courses of antibiotics which did nothing I was coughing up so much mucus each time I coughed I would have coughing fits all the time and would last for 20 mins or more I noticed change in cough that's why I went to see doc thank you so much for replying to my post I have been going thru this for the past month my head is in a mess

  • I also had a ct scan which receptionist asked doctor said nothing to worry about my docs on holiday so will see him when I get back.

  • It's wrong you have had to endure all that. If the scans are clear, and other doctors are happy with the scans, it could be anything. GERD (acid reflux), allergies etc etc. That's why his attitude is baffling.

  • Oh Kitty I'm so sorry you are having all this worry please push your doctor to refer you to see a specialist at least then you will know and it might not be cancer and then your mind will be at rest .
