Metastatic stage 4 Breast cancer

I was diagnosed with metastatic stage 4 breast cancer a month ago i have an insurance policy it pays out if diagnosed with a terminal illness ...is my diagnosis classed as terminal ?

  • Hello paulaj,

sorry to read of your diagnosis and l can well appreciate the current need to remove financial worries from your mind. l would suggest this is a question that needs directing to your consultant, contacting their secretary would be as good place to start. And as always it will depend on the definitions as laid out in your policy, but again l would suspect that your consultant would be sufficiently well versed in dealing with that.Another avenue would be to talk to the financial advisors that operate under the auspices of MAGGIES or MACMILLAN, again they should have the knowledge to help.

l hope it goes well for you,

                                                                                                  David

  • Thanks for your reply ...this cancer journey is so confusing especially in these covid times not seen the same oncologist just different ones since my diagnosis will have a word at my apt on Thursday xx

  • Hi Paula,

I should think it is. Or at least mine was.

Cancer has few benefits, but being able to say it is stage 4, when it actually is, is one thing that might help you. It did for me.

Having said that, I am still here ten years on and I am still here to be a complete pain to everyone!

Please don't be afraid to push yourself forward. You are important. And you have a place to be listened to. Some people can live with this for a long time with this. But you have a right to claim for your insurance as it is what it is and the future is uncertain. It is horrible having to go through the rigramorale of acceptance of asking, because it's such a horrible thing to know and to have to ask. I don't think I'm making much sense am I? When I feel so strong in some ways I can't admit to having stage 4. It is so conflicting!

Your medical professionals will be able to help you with all of this I am sure. Ask them for their help.

In trying to survive so I play it down, but in managing day to day I have learnt to accept where I am and allow help to come to me too. It is so very difficult. Emotionally very tricky.

Maybe this makes sense to you? Maybe not. But it is such a difficult thing with such conflicting emotions, it can be so hard to see a clear path through.

Good luck, and stay in touch.

    Mary

  • Hi so pleased to hear about your story and survival .... this cancer situation is so confusing I found the policy out by mistake put it away thinking it is classed not terminal but of course it is but like you said I don't like the phase and would never use it. I follow a few people on instagram who are in the same boat and they was discussing this subject and mentioned with life assurances etc classed as terminal. So ringing them tmrw,

It is nice to hear good positive stories like yours it gives me so much hope for my future, many many thanks for your reply.

    Much love Paula xxx

  • I'd call the insurance company and get them to go through what the policy actually entails. As with most insurance policies, it's not what's in the headline that matters, but the fine detail.

Whilst some will pay out, some might class "terminal" as being close to end of life. Like, given 6 months or even less. You really need to go through the wording with them because yeah, insurance companies aren't always very clear with their policies.
