Prostate Biopsy January

Hello

I am new to this forum it's been a roller Coaster ride of a anxiety and depression since early December when I had a prostate examination.

I due for a biopsy and would like to know what happens after what is the recovery time and will I have to wear a colostomy bag .

WORRIED

  • Hi Zaz62

As a woman, I cannot help with your question about the prostate biopsy, but can assure you that having this done will not result in a colostomy bag. This is major surgery which is not connected in any way to a prostate biopsy, and is due to removal of the colon.

  • Hi all they do is take samples from various places in the prostate to check for faulty cells . after test you normally wait for 1/2  hour incase of anything going wrong (extremely rare) .odd times a bit of bleeding or infection . You'll be sore for a good few days,it soon go off and that's it . No colostomy bag .

i had 12 samples taken some have more.

Keep positive and safe.nomatter what .

I was diagnosed Feb 2016 mine went to lymph nodes spine ribs pelvis and a lung ..

  • No need for pelvic floor exercise remember it's a biopsy not an operation, only really small samples taken .

If you have prostate out you do exercises.

  • Hi Zaz

My friend Billygoatt will keep you right about all things prostate, and will be a very good source of advice for you.

I just wanted you to know there was no connection with a colostomy, which I have myself, so it’s nothing for you to worry about.

  • Thank you Minska for your help i will indeed ask your friend Billygoatt for advice and help, no doubt I will have a variety of questions to ask.

  • Thank you Billygoatt you are a great help and I am sure I will be asking more questions in the near future

  • Hi ZAZ62.  Welcome to the forum.

I went through this torture in 2010.  It wasn't fun but it was over fairly quickly.

First off, you won't need a colostomy bag, but there may be bleeding from the region so a pad on your underpants wouldn't do any harm.

For the process, you lay on your front with your trousers down and they squirt an anaesthetic gel up your bum, and give you an injection of broad-spectrum antibiotics (in your arm!!).  Then it's down to business. They shoot a number of needles into your prostate via your back passage.  For each needle shot you may feel nothing at all, or it may be very tender.  I had some prostatitis on one side, that shooting into that was no fun for me.

If you've had an MRI then they may reduce the number of needles and just shoot into the suspicious area.

When it was over I got dressed and I was given a prescription for daily antibiotics to pick up from the hospital pharmacy.  While waiting, I started to feel wobbly and my brother-in-law (who was accompanying me) produced some glucose tablets which quickly perked me up.  So I suggest taking some very sugary sweets to suck after the event.

After that, I think we went for coffee in the hospital restaurant and I drove home.  I had no problems driving.

There was little residual pain, and no blood in my urine, however my ejaculate looked like tomato ketchup for about a week. but you wouldn't want to try it on your chips!  After two weeks I was fine.

Unfortunately, a friend also had a biopsy shortly after me, and he caught an infection and reported a temperature, severe pain and blood dripping out of his penis.  He and his wife sought help from the local hospital casualty department where they gave his some different antibiotics.  His biopsy came back negative for cancer (in 2010) whereas mine came back positive.

  • Hi zaz . I've just noticed telemando's reply to you it seems different hospitals do different things,I layed on my side still had jel.. no antibiotics in arm and  just tablets after. The rest you know from telemando's notes.

    Hope things go well.

    Billy.
