Fear with food

Hi all,

I was diagnosed with hormone responsive breast cancer just before Xmas. I have had surgery & treatment and now trying to get back on my feet. I generally eat healthy but previously with a fairly decent amount of animal protein. I have a good knowledge of nutrition in terms of supporting exercise and healthy diet and now I'm super confused. I don't know what is safe to eat, what I should focus on, should I eat more of a vegetarian diet? Is soy ok to have? Any advice would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance!

  • Alot of people go more vegetarian or soy. But if meat caused cancer everyone would have it also i know a couple of strict vegetarians who have had cancer so really don't think it makes any difference.. Good luck with whatever you do.

  • Thanks Billy.
Honestly my head is somewhere between thinking logically and irrationally. It helps to read some common sense - thanks!

  • Hi Sazzer,

It sounds like you’re doing exactly the right thing, but stressing that you may be getting it wrong.

For the past few years I’ve been volunteering with the CRUK Health Awareness Roadshow and have lost count of the number of people who have been stressed and confused by conflicting guidance and advice coming from difference places.

The old maxim of everything in moderation is as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago. The advice we give the public is to eat less, make sure your plate contains twice as much vegatables or salad as it does either protein or carb products and restrict your consumption of processed foods.

A dash of soy sauce or other condiments is fine so long as you remember to take into account the high salt level and use it in moderation.

You may have seen it already but there’s some really useful information about diet and cancer at www.cancerresearchuk.org/.../diet-and-cancer

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • That is super helpful thank you. I'm so confused about eating Soy products like tofu etc which apparently can help block hormones yet it contains oestrogen. My cancer was ostrogen responsive ... that's one thing I don't understand fully!
