Letrozole - Eye problems?

Hi everyone I’ve been taking Letrozole for the last few months and had my annual eye examination a few weeks ago. I provided a list of medications I’m taking and as an afterthought added Letrozole. She said that she’d recommend testing every few months because it can cause eye problems (can’t remember condition that she said).

I mentioned it to my Oncologist and he seemed to ‘poo poo’ it! Saying hundreds of ladies have taken it. Has anyone on here had any eye problems that may be caused by it?

I’m asking today because I’ve discovered a large blood blast behind my iris - not sore or affecting my sight, but just reminded me to ask.

Many thanks J

  • Hi there,

I have developed pretty severe eye problems since using Letrozole. I was a little bit short sighted before, but could read fine.I was in such good nick before all this happened (even though I'm now 66). Now I struggle to read (especially with my left eye). This eye is also out-of-focus for distance, too. Very worried about any further detioration - as I'd then be , effectively, 'partially-sighted'. I am an artist and love to draw. Apart from the obvious 'inconvenience' (driving etc. - absolutely essential, as I live in the country now) this is devastating for me. The sight seems to be fluctuating a bit at the moment - just hope to god it'll improver or at least settle down - because, at the moment I cannot even get glasses to correct it.

...Just done some further research - and found that aromatase inhibitors, including Letrozole, definitely CAN cause eye problems for some people (there have been quite a few studies on this). I've been referred to the county eye hospital for further tests by my local optician. I will let yoiu know how I get on...

    Best to everyone,

    Katie

  • How did you go on with your eyes? I am just starting Letrozole and I already have eye problems in the first place!

  • I know this thread is a few years old but I found it when googling eye problems in combination with muscle stiffness and Letrozole.

i had problems with one pupil bigger than the other this week and so went to a&e. They checked me out with a full eye exam, high blood pressure and diabetes screen - no obvious linked problems….

However there are slight signs of blood leakage at the back of my eye so I’ve been referred for a follow up eye assessment.

My muscle stiffness has recently got much worse too.

Reading this thread I’m wondering if I should ask for a different brand of medication to see if that helps in the first instance.

Any suggestions or thoughts please before I speak to the pharmacist or my breast cancer team?

    thanks!

  • Forgot to say - my brand of meds was changed recently. I’m not sure if that’s linked to the onset of these problems but it’s worth a look?
