Date of birth is wrong

Hi all , not sure where to post this I'm hoping someone can advise me. My  brother died recently of cancer in his neck which started as an ulcer, it was a very stressful and painful time. I registered his death then later found I had given the wrong date of birth. Everything else is correct. My concentration wasn't in focus. Money is short I can just about pay for the funeral. I read it's £90 to make a correction. Do I need to correct his dob. My husband says it isn't necessary to correct it , its mainly should someone in the future look up my brother for ancestry. I do hope you don't mind me posting this it's playing heavy on my mind.

  • We aren't really the people to ask because we're not lawyers.  However, checking on government and various council website confirms that the price is either £75 or £90, with no explanation of the difference between a £75 and a £95 correction.  Then if you want new copies of the certificate, it's a further £11 for each one.

Apparently, the original entry can't be amended, instead a corrective note is attached to it.  The corrective note is also printed on any new certificates.

What I find interesting is that there is absolutely no mention on any of the websites of a penalty for failing to issue a correction.  If it was compulsory to correct a mistake once known, then surely the government would issue a fine for failing to correct - but there's no mention of such a thing.

I'd be inclined to let matter stand, but if you're not sure, then you should be able to consult a Citizens' Advice Bureau for free.
