Mother about to be diagnosed with Lung Cancer

Hello,

My mother is 82, gave up smoking 29 years ago and has had a bronchoscopy for suspected lung cancer. She had over 2 l fluid on her lung which has been drained and a ct scan has shown a 5.1cm lesion that has spread to 2 lymph nodes and because of this and the fluid (pleural effusion)  they are classing it as stage 4.

Once results are in there will be another mdt meeting and she is going to see Consultant (with me) on Jan 8th,it would be sooner but obviously Xmas and New Year are slowing things up. Now my mum didnt understand the terminology in her discharge note and she is in denial and tbh Im not prepared to burst her bubble.

I presume her only course of treament will be palliative care...I have had bone cancer mself so unfortunately have a bit of  an idea of his evil disease alhough I was very lucky and am in remission.

I will be her sole carer as my brother died 9 years ago and I want to be as aware of the situation and of things that will happen to her as possible. When we go for her Consultants meeting does anyone know how they will advise her that it is incurable...will they give her a full prognosis and possibly a time scale? I want to be as geared up as possible for her so I can be as helpful to her as I possibly can.I would love to think they are wrong because I adore my mum and although she is 82 Im not ready to lose her and never thought she would get lung cancer because she had stopped smoking so long ago.

The lung cancer nurses are being wonderful and calling her most days, the card they gave her says chest nurses but looking up the hospital I saw that they are lung cancer nurses so that sort of dashed any bit of hope I had.

Sorry to ramble on but thanks so much for reading..consultant thinks its T4N2M1A.

Thanks again,

Jacci

  • Your welcome jacci, mine was primary chondrosarcoma

In my thigh ive had half my thigh bone taken

Away. You are the first person I've met when

Has had it. How are you now? Xxx

  • Mine was as well...Conxultant was very surprised as he has never met anyone with it in their distal ulna, it was a grade 1 so I was very lucky..I had it removed and a bone graft put in, I had it done in feb 2012 and yep Im fine, next check up in Feb, how are you?

  • Me I had half my thigh bone taken away with 11cm tumour

They replaced it with wires 20cm plus plate and 9

Pins . At the moment I can't walk and is going to

Be a long recovery I've been told. I have check ups every

Two months at moment until all healed then every

3 months. Where do u go for ur check ups?

I go to oswestry bone cancer tumour unit.

It's so nice to speak with someone who has been

Though what u have. ( I mean it in good way ) although

Wish it wasnt about cancer. This disease is very evil

And is like a roller coaster ride. I'm so glad you have recovered

And thank you for talking to me about it.

    Hugs

  • Bless you,its not been easy for you has it Hun. Im fine cant put my weight on it but other thasn that have full mobility. I broke my wrist trying to open a window at work and it was found...turned out  when they looked at my xray I had been suffering stress fractures for prob years but I didnt know. I was fortunate I get private healthcare through my work so had it done privately. I still had to travel from Sussex to Herts to have it done, as you know there are not many Consultants that deal with it.

My man is quite confident it shouldnt come back, he has told me it wont spread and it wont kill me so I have to believe him. Hate the check ups because you cant help but worry then. I would rather mine came back though than to see my Mum suffering like she is...It would only be another op for me.You are right though its nice to speak to someone else as its so rare..about 80/90 people are diagnosed each year in UK with chondro I believe.

You take care and I hope your recovery goes really well, talk to me whenever you like Hun.

  • Hello Jacci,

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum is in hospital. She will be well looked after though. Make sure you are looking after yourself and that you get yourself properly better before you go rushing around! This journey is a rollercoaster and I remember how daunting it is being at the start. If it's any comfort I can promise that there are good days as well as bad one and small things you and your Mum do will be 100 times more special.

Take Care and feel free to moan anytime you want :-)

  • Thanks Hope, feel much better today, the only positive I can take from all this is that Mum and I had a bit of a strained relationship. TBH she often didnt want me to visit and I could never understand why. This rotten thing has already made us much much closer, and I do have

    some lovely memories from Xmas.

    Take care.
