Transport costs - is there anything I can get to help with travel or parking? I'm due to have radiotherapy for breast cancer but the hospital is far away

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer following what was to be my last mammogram as I am 71 this year. After the lumpectomy it is planned to have radiotherapy. I'm trying to be really organised beforehand. Myself and my partner only have state pension, the hospital I will have to go to for radiotherapy is well over an hours drive each way or a two hour bus trip each way. My concern is the cost of driving two hours each day for minimum of two weeks plus £6 each day parking. Would I be physically up to the bus trip every day which would be free or is there any help I can get for travel costs and parking.

  • Hi Elizabeth,

I don’t blame you- that’s quite a trip even in the whole of your health.

I see that CKell also has a 2 hour round trip if travelling by car. It would be worth enquiring from her care team if the hospital offers any transport services for patients receiving radiotherapy. She may qualify for a volunteer driver or a taxi.
