Looking for travel insurance for someone with a cancer diagnosis that hasn't started treatment yet. Any recommendations?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for travel insurance companies that will cover someone with a cancer diagnosis but who hasn’t yet started treatment. Has anyone had positive experiences with insurers in this situation?

Any advice, tips, or company names would be really appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

  • Hi Ed I got the GHIC card like you suggested.  Allclear travel quoted me £1950 for a one week trip to Portugal and £267 for an annual trip cover with Insurancewith.  I really dont know how they can be so massively different.  Are you off to Portugal in September as well, we are going to Praia da Luz hopefully.  I havent booked it yet as waiting until last minute.  Take care.

  • Hi Lee

I hope you are doing OK. Im heartened to see that you are still planning for your trip to Portugal. I think some companies quote silly prices to get rid of higher risk clients as they simply dont want the bother. My last quotes were £900 and £1400. Ill try insurancewith.com again but by phone as online was refused a quote. I will book last minute too to fit between hospital visits.. Recent scans show no progession of cancer but I can feel a change. Back is getting more painful and I get numb fingers and weakness in my hand I wondered if you experince anything similar.  All the best Lee.

  • Hi Ed,  I found a big change in pain in spine came on quite quickly.  I must say the radiotherapy has really helped with the pain, it feels a lot better now.  I only get numb and tingling fingers and hand at night not really in the day.  I haven't worn my back brace too often, mainly only when I walk my dogs in the woods.  It is very hot and it make me sweaty, probably be better in the cooler weather.  Are you taking medication for the pain as I know you don't like to, but sometimes it is necessary. Big hugs.

  • Hi Lee

thank you for the update on symptoms caused by cancer in your spine. So I'm not alone with the tingling and numbness in my hand and fingers I can get this day or night. I also get weakness in my hand and the other night I could not hold a fork to eat dinner but Im OK today. I still take paracetamol but have been prescribed Naproxen which I take evenings as pain is worse at night. I take Omeprazole to counteract the acid stomach Naproxen gives. The Omeprazole interferes with the absorption of calcium so the Adcal is not as effective. I dont get on with opiod painkillers both mentally and constipation wise. However if the pain gets worse I will have to consider them plus the single dose of radiotherapy to one vertebrae. It good to hear you are still walking your dogs and have been able to go about without the sweaty back brace. Hopefully you can make your way to Praia de Luz. I remember going there in 1970s it was beautiful with the big cliffs and lovely beach. We are going to go to Tavira at the other end of the Algarve. Looking forward to it very much. Returning the virtual hug.

  • I agree - whatever you do, shop around!
For fewer sleepless nights, stick to the UK too.
I went to India immediately after chemo and the insurance cost more than the flight!

    HI Dave

Travel insurance can be extremly expensive especilly to North America Australia and long haul destinations. Good advice to take UK holidays. Its been fantastic weather this summer for tourists and between hospital visits we have taken several short breaks exploring our beautiful and interesting country without the need for insurance. Highly recommended.

  • Hi Ed,  sorry to bother you again.  I have never heard of Tavira before and have just googled it.  It does look lovely, have you been before and is it very big and busy?  I prefer smaller, quieter places.  I am not one for going to McDonalds or a chippy when I am on holiday.  It looks like some beautiful scenery and churches there and salt pans.  I just wondered what it was like and could your recommend it?  Many thanks

  • Hello lee

That stretch of the coast is a bit less developed than the rest of  Algarve. Tavira has no high rise buildings or chip shops or McDonalsds. It has a good range of hotels and guest houses and restaurants. You can get boats on the riverside to take you to the beach on Tavira Island for a couple of Euros. It is quite a relaxed laid back town. I dont know how busy it gets as Ive only visited off season. If you land at Faro airport it is worth spending 2 nights in Faro an interesting little town with boat trips out to the nature reserve. You can get to Faro and Tavira by bus or taxi.
