Travel insurance - does stage 4 prostate cancer class me as terminal for insurance purposes?

I have stage 4 prostrate cancer but it is being managed by jag & hormone treatment and PSA LEVELS are zero.I have been told its not curable but manageable. Am I classed as terminal for insurance purposes ??

  • Hi Scottie5194 and welcome to the forum, please don't mention terminal when applying for travel insurance your premium will shoot up, you do not have to tell them all they need to know is you are receiving treatment and a doctors letter saying you have more than 6 months to live, a good company to try is Insurancewith, founded by a disabled lady who was fed up being ripped off all the time, take care.

  • Hi Scottie,

    NO!

Technically stage 4 just means it has spread to different parts of your body. There is no formal definition of terminal but it is generally understood to mean that a patient is expected to die within six weeks. To put this into a personal context, I was diagnosed with a stage 4 cancer in 2013.

Shop around for travel insurance - just be brutally honest when answering their questions but don’t offer any information they don’t adk you for. I’ve used both insurancewith and allclear in the past. They will charge a lot more if you’ve just completed treatment or are awaiting treatment. Single trip may be all they’ll agree to but multi-trip can give value for money if you plan more than one trip in the next year.

Whoever your ask, check out the small print before signing - I once almost bought what looked like a good value policy only to find they’d excluded any pre-existing conditions including my cancer.

    Best wishes

  • Hello eddiel I have stage four  cancer it is not terminal just not curable, think of it like stage one diabetes where it's also not curable but is treatable with ongoing tests, all the best enjoy yourself

  • I get so angry with these insurance people I don't understand why Macmillan hasn't set up a travel website for cancer patients , as they don't do much  to help when I've needed them except pass the buck to someone else,
