Chemo and Corona Virus

I'm just coming up to my 3rd cycle of chemotherapy for breast cancer. My oncologist has decided to do a telephone consultation so that I can stay away from the hospital before my next treatment. It's extra worry with coping with the side effects and now Corona Virus with a compromised white cell count to fight infection. I have decided to stay at home as much as possible, with just the occasional trip out for shopping. Staying away from crowded places and have put off any social gatherings for the time being.
I hope everyone is managing as best as they can.

  • My oncologist contacted me earlier.  Due to the coronavirus and compromised immune system due to chemo, she has given me the option of having a lumpectomy then RT then chemo.  I'm stage 1 triple negative.  This means chemo really is the only means of stemming/removing all the cancerous cells.  The issue with chemo after surgery is that they will have no idea of pathological response on my cancer.  I have this massive fear that the cancer has spread.

I've really restricted my outings to those that are essential and from now will be walking to hospital appointments wearing a mask.  My partner will be staying in the house with my daughter.

The oncologist has said the decision is mine.  Previously TNBC was treated with chemo adjuvantly.  Its only in recent years that the medical profession have opted for the chemo, surgery then RT route.

    I don't know what to do :-(

  • I'm having my blood test before nextchemo at my GP's. they've advised to wait in the car and then they will come and get me for test in isolated room  so I don't have to wait in waiting room. They are taking it seriously so that's good.

  • Stage 1 means they have caught it early and it hasnt spread I thought? I am Stage 2 HERneg and had masectomy. There was cancer in 2 of my lymph nodes underarm that were removed. I am now having 6 cycles of chemo followed by 3 weeks of radiotherapy. Every person is different so you can only go by the advice of your oncologist and team judged by your scans. Huge decision I know, but I am sure you will make the best one for you. The Corona Virus has added to our stress, but with all necessary precautions we will get through.

    Best wishes,

  • My original treatment plan was chemo (4x fortnightly AC then 12x weekly taxol) followed by lumpectomy and then radiotherapy.  TN is aggressive (grade 3) and chemo is the only means of treatment.

  • Oh OK, I didnt know that TN was Grade 3, so chemo will be best for you. When do they want to start treatment? Its so daunting, but there's lots of us out there that will help you through, I expect you will feel better when a decision is made and treatment starts. I'm in lockdown, no going out, no friends to visit and treatment to look forward to Monday!

  • Due to start on Friday.  Its all very scary!

  • Hi SIlver,

I am in a similar situation. I have two more cycles of chemotherapy ahead of me. Tomorrow is the next one. I have been avoiding going outside for quite a while now. Now with COVID 19 I face a new problem. I have two young children (7 and 9). Since yesterday I know one of my daughter's classmate seems to have the virus (cough and fever). Since the UK does not test mild cases, I do not even know whether it is indeed the virus. I decided the only thing I can do to stay safe is self-isolate in one of our rooms. It feels horrible.

  • Hi Silver

I seem to be on the same treatment plan. I completed my second cycle of EC last Wednesday. I've had a lumpectomy and lymph clearance with cells found in 1 out of 12 nodes.
I am currently isolating with three children. I am a wreck and won't let anyone in the house.
I am considering stopping my chemo. I'm nervous that if I do another cycle in two weeks and the outbreak gets worse I will have an even lower immunity. I'm going to call the Oncologist Department today for advice.
    Is anyone having similar thoughts?

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

Its not easy is it. I am speaking to my Oncologist today, as my 3rd chemo is on Monday. She has arranged a telephone consultation so I don't need to go to the hospital. I shall ask lots of questions, It's a good idea for you to ring your oncology team about your worries. I have stopped any friends or family coming to the house too.

I don't have young children, but a partner who's going out to work and I'm worried he'll bring it home but he is being super careful.
Im sure your medical team will give you the best advice, I do feel for you as feeling poorly and 3 children is not easy. I hope you have help.

    Best wishes

  • Hi there

Similar situation my wife is a health care worker in a council run rehabilitation centre like a step down place from the local hospital and she is still working. We also have a 4yr old grandson we look after so it's difficult all round. My oncologists team has just called and my appointment on Monday will now be a telephone consultation.

    Stay safe
