Chemo and Corona Virus

I'm just coming up to my 3rd cycle of chemotherapy for breast cancer. My oncologist has decided to do a telephone consultation so that I can stay away from the hospital before my next treatment. It's extra worry with coping with the side effects and now Corona Virus with a compromised white cell count to fight infection. I have decided to stay at home as much as possible, with just the occasional trip out for shopping. Staying away from crowded places and have put off any social gatherings for the time being.
I hope everyone is managing as best as they can.

  • Hello Silver,

Just wanted to say we are thinking of you as you are having to deal with the extra worry of this Coronavirus at the same time as having to cope with chemotherapy side effects. It must be very stressful for you. We have information on our site on Coronavirus and cancer which you can find here.

If at any time you want to talk to one of our nurses about anything that may be worrying you in the current climate, don't hesitate to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

We're all here for you on the forum to support one another online at a time when it might be  little more difficult to go about our daily lives in the ways we were used to.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Silver, I'm the same, 3rd cycle due 25th March with oncologist appt and bloods due 23rd. I wonder if my oncologist might do phone consultations too. I'm staying in as much as possible too to minimise risk.

    Take care

  • As if we haven't got enough on our plate, worry about a Virus! All we can do is stay at home and away from crowds as much as possible. I spend time gardening when I'm feeling well.

Chemo is no walk in the park, how can something that makes you so ill make you better? Can't wait until end of treatment and that all clear from the doctors........

  • I am to have my 4th cycle 25th March and expect to be advised in the near future to self isolate and only go out to attend treatment appointment.

Best wishes to all cancer patients and nursing staffx

  • My thought exactly Silver.

I need the next 3 treatments out of the way and get nearer to the end goal which is the light at the end of the tunnel keeping me going.xx

    Best wishesx

  • Hi everyone I am currently having weekly chemotherapy and was looking to go back to work today after recently having surgery for an Ileostomy. I work in an open plan office and use public transport to get to and from work. I feel fine in myself apart from the normal side effects from my chemotherapy. I would welcome thoughts on my return to work or not.

    Regards Mark

  • Hi

I couldnt even imagine going back to work until my treatment is done.

Well done you for even trying my friend. Just take on board any advice and do whats right for you.

I can imagine you want back to work to get some normality back in your life.

Best wishes whatever you decide to dox

  • Hi Mark,

I would say you are vulnerable, recovering from surgery and having chemo. How are your blood cells for fighting infection?  With the added stress of Corona Virus, public transport and enclosed office environment I would be careful, but I am no expert so I would take advice from your doctors and care team.

    Stay safe,

    Silver

  • Due for 5th (of 6) chemo 23/03. Just got PSA down to its lowest level 1.6 and officially in remission.

That's the good news, my biggest worry is the disorganised melee for the blood tests, sometimes with dozens of patients in the waiting room. Previously was arriving at 07:00 in the morning when it opens, but for the last one it seems everybody else had the same idea.

Be a good idea though if the consultant used a phone review instead of face to face.

As nobody else has mentioned it, leaving aside the coronavirus issue, I cannot fault the NHS treatment. As always they have their critics, but when they need to extract the digit, its done with extreme care and attention. And pretty fast too from diagnosis.

  • Hi

My work the dwp has told me not to come into work for the foreseeable future 12 weeks is the current government guidelines. I have a further 12 weekly chemotherapy sessions on Friday of each week so as like the majority of us we will be withdrawing from social contact. I am currently waiting to see if I will be paid or not yet as the dwp guidelines are anything to do with covid 19/Coronavirus it gets recorded as special leave I think so doesn't go against your sickness absence. Now for me I have had at least 6 months off in the last 12 months alone and I can't stress how supportive my employer has been during this period. My profile gives my 12 months journey.

    Thanks Mark
