Starting Chemo in Jan 2020...eeek

I am due to start chemo in Jan 2020 and all the things I have to think about are in some ways a bit crazy, getting my hair cut, a wig, will I lose my eyebrows (I have never been much good at makeup so might have to start to learn), what to take to the first treatment, regular blood tests, getting a journal to note my experiences so that if I need to talk to my Doctor I have it all down because I know I will just not remember everything, the list just gets longer.  It is another step in my recovery and it scares me a bit but still trying to keep my sense of humour (I bought my regular bottle of conditioner the other day and my other half laughed and said it’s going to last a lot longer :D love him)

  • Hi sonsH, when you go to first cemo you want to remember you'll be there for a while, so something to read or look at, eat and drink. Most oncology wards once your in your not allowed out till your treatment is finished (that session). It's trying to keep the ward as sterile as possible. Most people don't have any side effects until about day four. Have you got a thermometer just in case you feel ill if temperature is up call ward no you should have. Good luck. If you want any further information hopefully me or others can help....... Billy

  • Hi, will you on fec chemo? Don't forget your mints as the red one gives you a metallic taste...are you being cannulated?

They pump you full of stuff before the chemo and you'll literally skip out of the unit....( it will hit later) chemo day is an anticlimax, you get yourself all nerded up and then afterwards you think...is that it?!

A good sense of humour is essential, mine can be pretty dark but it pulled me through.

You just got to dive in love...let us know how it goes? Xx

  • Hi it's very daunting waiting for your first chemo I remember thinking the same.  The nurses were great explaining everything they were doing from the start.  In addition to taking a drink, food and something to occupy your mind I also took my own blanket as I was using the cooling cap so glad I did it was absolutely freezing!! It's great that you are keeping positive and that your hubby has a sense of humour.  You will also be sent home with some antisickness tablets (not that I needed Them) and some steroid tablets - they made me so hungry for the first few days afterwards my husband couldn't believe I've how much I was eating.   Oh and a must, make sure your drink lots of water and I mean lots. This is the start of your journey to get rid of that pesky thing and you are going to beat it

  • Following as start mine in jan too xxx  glad to see your black humour has kicked in!! Will get us through it!!!  Went to have blood taken yesterday just after I was told about having chemo and the lovely blood lady asked me if I was having a good day  my very nonchalant reply 'yes if you like having chemo and losing your hair'  will make her think twice asking that question again I was laughing  but did feel a touch guilty lol   I think we can get away with murder now!!!  I've already played the  'dont they know I've got cancer'  card!!!

  • Hi SonsH,

I will be starting Chemo around the same time, I haven't had dates yet but have had pathology results from my op.
I found this blog by liz.oriordan.co.uk who has been through breast cancer chemo is full of practical tips. Thought it may help you,
